Wannabe Sports Medicine Physicians - How To Become One

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Who is a sports medicine physician? What does he or she do exactly? These are questions which are on the minds of many people who have recently heard of the term sports medicine physician. To become a sports medicine doctor one has to first be a physician and then undergo special training in sports medicine. Here the doctor concentrates on the long term health and fitness of his patients by helping them to overcome illness and injuries.

The main job of a sports physician is to help his patients to function at their peak level and prevent any untoward setbacks in their physical health which can affect their sports, school and working life.

These specialized doctors do not concentrate only on sportspeople and athletes but also people who take up training programs just to keep fit. What exactly does a sports medicine physician play in a person?s life? What qualifications are necessary for someone to become one?

A sports medicine physician doubles up not only as a general physician but also incorporates sports medicine into his treatment procedures so as to help prevent illness and help maintain perfect health of his clients.

Normally in any sports there is a team of doctors catering to the needs of the players and it is the sports medicine physician who normally heads the team of doctors. This team can be made of specialists in surgical procedures, sports trainers, therapists, coaches and others. All of them are experienced professionals who could have specialized in any one of the following fields like family practice, Emergency medicine, Pediatrics, internal medicine, rehabilitation and Physical medicine.

You will find that all sports medicine physicians would have completed an additional 1-2 years training in specialized subjects in sports medicine through fellowship programs which are accredited. After having completed their certificate in areas like Internal medicine, Family Practice, pediatrics or Emergency medicine, these professionals then become eligible to take up another special examination to qualify in the field of sports medicine.
These sports physicians then work to obtain more training in non-musculoskeletal areas like head injuries and their treatments, treating athletes with chronic illness like asthma and diabetes, in aspects of supplements, nutrition and performance based issues, and prevention of injuries.

Now having learnt what exactly a sports medicine physician does when it comes to treating in sports medicine the next step is to search for a qualified person in the field of sports medicine.

The best way to find a capable and qualified person in this field is through referrals. Seek the help of your family doctor, friends and those working along with you as they would provide the best advice. You can also take the help from athletes when searching for a good sports medicine physician.

You can also search in online listings or at the American orthopedic Society, American Medical Association and the Physician and Sports Medicine Association.

Who Invented Soccer? The Far-Reaching Roots of Soccer

"Who invented soccer?" this is the famous question most people asked about the famous sport. As we all know, Soccer is widely believed to be one of the most popular game in the world. Many people wonder who invented soccer and how the game came into being.

Many cultures and nationalities claim the game as their own invention, but there are few definite claim that decides who is right.

People in ancient China was so unsure of recognizing the game soccer or football as their own invention even though early history traced back that soccer game is familiar to a game called cuju in China. The ancient Romans and Greeks also had a game similar to soccer or football as well as people in Medieval Europe. In ancient soccer like game, pig bladders were engaged as the ball and puffed up and leather from animal skins was fed with old rags and straw to look like a spherical shape that could be manipulated around with the feet.

The modern roots of soccer as we know today can be traced back to mid 1860's in England. It became popular because schools started competing with each other. However, during those times, there are slight problems due to lack of universal rules to follow.

It was then in 1963 that Football Association (FA) formed to establish one set of rules so each teams could have a fair game.

Today, there are many soccer teams around the world having a lot of famous soccer players which form a long legacy in the history of soccer.

Soccer Trapping Drills

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Being able to trap and control ball is important for any soccer player. No matter the trajectory of the ball's arrival, a good soccer player must be able to receive and control it to maintain possession. Youth soccer coaches hoping to produce quality players should focus a good amount of effort on making sure their players learn to adequately trap the ball.

Whether it is a pass from a teammate, a clearance from the goaltender, or a cross from the outside, maintaining possession is vital. Your team will not be able to control the game if you can't even control the ball. The team that dominates possession during a game usually creates more scoring opportunities A good first touch on the ball is often the difference between getting that goal and getting stripped of the ball.

If your players fail to trap and control the ball and constantly give away possession, you will be in a very rough spot. Make sure to work on trapping skills early in your season and often. Get the fundamentals of trapping down while your players are stationary, and then take trapping drills to a moving platform.

Most of all, good trapping skills are developed through repetition so make sure you have a list of drills that build trapping skills and give players lots of touches on the ball.

Focus on teaching players to cushion the impact of the ball like a pillow, and try to drop the ball directly to their feet.

If you are short on trapping, skills, finishing, possession, overlapping, defending or any other type of drill you could imagine, this youth soccer coaching manual can give you pre-planned practices and various drills that will keep practice fun, exciting, and informative for your players.

Soccer Equipment - What Do You REALLY Need?

For kids, soccer is a great sport to play because you need so little equipment to play it. Basically, you need a ball and some space - that's it. Walk into your local sports supply store, though, and you may well start to think that you need to have a very large bank balance to afford all the bits and pieces that the salesman will tell you are vital to play the game.

The reality is that if your child is happy to just muck around with a soccer ball, you probably don't need much in the way of soccer equipment. But if they want to get involved in a team and start some soccer training, then it's worth spending a few dollars to make sure they have the right gear.

If they're going to play in a team, then it's most likely the team will have a uniform. This will involve a top, shorts and matching socks. Some teams are happy to use fairly generic uniforms, otherwise will have a specific design. It may be possible for you to buy a second hand uniform from another team member who has outgrown theirs - it's certainly worth asking!

Shoes are the next item on the list. It's possible to play soccer in standard trainers, but it may not be a good idea for your child's feet and ankles. Grass can be slippery if it's a little bit wet, and soccer often involves rapid changes of direction. If you can manage, it's worthwhile buying soccer footwear with cleats. These will help to provide much better traction on grass and reduce the risk of slipping over and twisted ankles. It's worth spending a few extra dollars to get a good quality pair, because they will certainly be subject to some tough punishment!

Shin guards are optional, but are a good idea even at the beginning level. They need to be firm, but still allow enough movement and flexibility to not interfere with the player's movement. It's important to try them on to make sure they are the right fit for your child.

If your child needs a soccer ball to practice with at home, then check what size ball is used for games. Smaller children use a smaller size soccer ball, and it's important to practice with the same size ball at home for consistency. If your child already has a standard size ball it may still be worth buying a smaller one to match what they use with their team.

Some other soccer equipment that you might like to consider, but which falls into the category of "likes" rather than must haves, includes:

- Practice goal - but you'll need some space to use it!
- Soccer equipment bag
- Soccer cones for drill practice

When your child takes up a new sport, like soccer, it can seem a little overwhelming at first to buy all the necessary equipment. But if you can afford to buy good quality soccer equipment then your investment will pay for itself by withstanding a lot of the rough usage and vigorous activity that goes with soccer without falling apart. Better to replace soccer equipment because your child has outgrown it, rather than because it's fallen apart.

Soccer Practice Plans For Volunteer Coaches

Coaching a soccer team is rough for the first time coach. While some may have previously played soccer or even Assistant Coached in the past, being the Head Coach brings a whole new level or responsibility.

As the leader of the team, you will be responsible for making the final decision in practices and in games. This position also requires you to plan out a practice schedule that will help your team evolve into better soccer players, both individually and as part of a team.

All these roles come with the added pressure of expectations from players and their parents, that is enough to make even the toughest individual, crack. For this purpose, I have put together a book with soccer practice plans that will make each of your jobs as a coach much more manageable. If you are short on the resources to plan effective soccer practices, i.e. time or knowledge, my book will help you immensely and possibly take your team all the way to the top.

The soccer drill book comes with 20 Differentpre-planned soccer practices that cover each and every topic, skill and situation that you will come across during the season. If you follow my soccer practice plans, your players will learn and enjoy the game, their parents will be happy and you will have succeeded in virtually all of your responsibilities as a head coach.

Youth soccer is more competitive then ever before and if you don't have a plan for soccer practice, your players will pay the price.

Sport Shoes, Choosing the Right One

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Sport Shoes

There are many different shoes to wear for sport. You may be thinking that all sport shoes come under the heading trainers, which is correct in a way but there are many different variations of trainers. Depending on the type of sport you are playing or what physical activity you are involved in will depend on the type of sport shoe you should be wearing. Here is a look at some of the different sports / activities and the sport shoe you should be wearing for them.

Football Sport Shoes - typically football sport shoes are studded because you generally play outdoors, and with normal trainers you can easily go sliding on the grass. The studded boots stop you from spending half the time on your bottom and allow you to still play the game with ease and speed. If you are playing indoor football then the normal sport trainer will do as no studs are needed because you are only playing in a hall on wooden floors usually. Ridged bottomed sport shoes are better in this situation because you can still slide around which can cause injury, the ridges will stop this and allow you to move in different directions speedily without hesitation.

Running Sport Shoes - if you are runner then your footwear really is very important. Running puts pressure on your legs and knees, especially if you are running on hard surfaces such as concrete roads and pavements. Running shoes are padded and have quite a heel on them to cushion your feet from the impact of the floor. Instead of your foot smacking down on the floor which causes injury the running shoe absorbs the brunt of it so your legs and knees feel very little or nothing at all. Running shoes are quite high as well so they protect your ankles, if you have ever gone for a run in gym trainers you may have noticed that your ankles hurt and ache the day after, this is because gym shoes do not protect or give any strength to your ankles. Running shoes give them that extra security so your ankles don't hurt the next day.

Gym Trainers - sport shoes used for gym are generally a lot smaller than your average trainer you see for outdoor sports. This is because in a gym you are in a very controlled environment with soft cushioned floors, and the equipment is specially designed to make it safe for you and your body. Your trainers do not need to be as big because they do not need to absorb any impact because there isn't any. If you are doing weights or situps for example your feet are very much protected in simple and thin trainers, even if you use the running machines, the conveyor belts are so cushioned that light trainers are fine to use without causing damage to your knees or ankles.

Soccer Team Logos

Soccer team logos are the representations of each and every team. This insignia signifies their teams color, mission and other symbolisms attributed to their team. For many years, this has been part of so many teams that it has been a constant part of each team's uniform. This makes the teams more unique and have a sense of being special than any other team. Most of the time, this logos are copyrighted and that it has been also a very famous commercial brand for some. Each and every football club should have their very own soccer team logo in order to create a distinct representation. Sometimes, when the names of the teams are not mentioned, these logos help determine which team is which. It is the form of the identification indication for teams.

Many teams come up with different styles in their logos. Despite varying differences, each team tries to capture their goals, missions and principles through this logo. Rest assured that there are no logos that appear just as the same with any other team. This creates the sense of originality that each team should bring when coming up with their logos. Usually, their logos carry their colors and symbols of what they are representing. For international soccer teams, more often than not, their country's flag colors are the ones well-represented in their logos.

So that's the fun part of making these soccer team logos, coming up with something unique, original and definitely striking and memorable. Speaking of memorable, these logos should be memorable enough to be incorporated with their teams that in cases of confusion, the logos can play the part of team identification.

Rules of Soccer

Playing soccer is easy; being good at soccer takes a bit more effort. To be competent on the sport, the only way is to practice and play.

Like basketball, soccer players that are on the game field have their own designated positions. In the game of soccer there are eleven designated soccer positions on each team in the playing field. A single soccer team on the playing field has one goalie or goalkeeper and ten outfielders to play a variety of defensive, attacking and midfield positions. Each of these soccer positions has their own role and area of operation and certain set of skills are required in each of these soccer positions.

Defensive Positions or Defenders

Defenders are the players that are behind the midfielders. The main responsibilities of players designated in these soccer positions are to provide defensive support to the goalie and prevent the opposing team from scoring. Defenders usually stay on their side of the field.

* Centerback - the centerbacks' main responsibility is to stop the opposing team from scoring or more particularly the strikers and to get the ball out of the penalty area as much as possible.

* Sweeper - sweepers are the adaptable type of centerbacks. They sweep the ball if the opponents manage to break through the defensive line. A sweeper must have excellent ball handling, ball control and ball passing abilities to counter any attacking moves that the opponent does.

* Fullback - fullbacks are the players that prevent the ball from crossing or cutting back into the penalty area.

Midfielders

Midfielders are positioned midway between the strikers and defenders. Their primary responsibilities are to make sure that they have possession of the ball, take the ball from the opposing team's defenders and pass it to the strikers. Being a midfielder is one of the most exhausting soccer positions because midfielders' duties are broad. They are either called back into defensive position or sometimes attack the opposing team along with the strikers.

* Defensive midfield - duties of players with these soccer positions is to take the ball away from the opposing team's attackers.

* Attacking midfield - players with in these positions are responsible for creating scoring opportunities.

Strikers or Forward or Attackers

Players with these soccer positions are the ones nearest to the opposing team's goal. Their main duty is to score goals. The other duty of players with these soccer positions is to set up goal for their team mates. Most well known soccer players are strikers because strikers tend to score more than any of their team mates.

22 players and 11 members per team play soccer. Positions can be variable depending on the soccer formation and strategy employed, but usually a team roster includes a goalkeeper and a couple of defenders, midfielders and attackers.

Passing the Ball

Passing the ball is very easy, though the hardest part of passing accuracy. This is the starter player's handicap. To do a standard rolling pass, you should kick the ball with the inside of your foot (instep and toe part). Your kick should hit the lateral part of the ball for it to travel in a roll. Kicking with the inside part of the foot also allows accuracy, wherein the arch is used to provide the ball direction. Ok, try it. Kick the ball with modest force with the arch providing direction.

Intermediate Passing and Shooting

The link also featured how to do a high pass. Notice how his foot made contact with the ball. For the ball to fly, the bottom of the ball should be hit while kicking. And to provide direction, the inside part (the toe part) of your foot should be the main contact of the bottom (of the ball)

Shooting the ball is the same as passing by a high ball. Even a rolling pass is considered shooting if it is used to score a goal. So now you see the importance of passing.

Playing soccer is easy; being good at soccer takes a bit more effort. To be competent on the sport, the only way is to practice and play. To be better, yet more practice and playing. But to be the best, again practice and play.

International Sports Ventures - Orientations and Effects

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Since sports are the best way to stay fit and healthy, sports should have an essential space in daily routine. So many sports are here to indulge with like football, basketball, cricket etc. In early days sports were only for entertainment and fun but now sports are like the elements of national pride. As any sport emerges in popularity, there might be some rules and regulations for the sake of fairness and wellness of the game. This condition leads to form a regulating authority to govern and organize a fair and successful sporting event. As world gradually converted to a local village, international sports ventures came into light. For every sport, which has global recognition, there is an international governing authority for organizing the international sporting events.

These ventures provide a global identity to the specific sport as well as players. No doubt, Olympics are the greatest sporting events in the world. Olympic Games provide the best platform to a player for his dream performance. To win a medal in Olympics is not only give the name and fame to the player but also it is the concern of national pride. Some other more localized sporting events are also emerged as well such as SAIF games, Commonwealth games, Asian games etc. These events organize so many games in a specific location and time. In some sense, these events bring many cultures and countries under the same umbrella and help to reduce the controversies in international issues. So these events have a sporting impact as well as a social impact.

World cups are also big international sporting events which are oriented to a specific game as ICC world cup, FIFA world cup, Rugby world cup etc. In tennis there are many competitions which are country oriented like US open, Australian open etc. Some club oriented competitions are also in existence, where the players from different national teams play under one flag of specific clubs.

These international sports ventures affect the host country, where they are being organized, in every sense from their economy to infrastructure. These ventures take so much effort and time. Such kind of events leaves a long term social and economical effect. Sometimes international issues are also dealt with these ventures. The tourism industry of host country gets a boost, infrastructure being developed as per international standards. People get employment, as development for these games involve large man power and economic investment.

As these ventures require huge direct investment of funds, it affects the people of hosting countries in some sense. Organizing committee also provide aids for funding, but for organizing a successful event so much amount of dedication and self motivation should be in the host. Some club based events are very successful in generating revenues, since they involve so much glamor and thrill with the game. Some ventures like Olympics and Commonwealth have their sole motive to invoke the people for the importance of games in their life. Other effect of these events is to exchange the social and cultural behavior. They are useful to understand and explore the cultures of different parts of the world.

Soccer Tryout - The Big Day

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Whether you are going for soccer tryout for a young soccer time at high school level or at higher levels, you must keep in mind certain rules associated with the same in order to get the best result.

Is The Tam A Perfect Fit For You?

The first and foremost thing for you is to decide whether the team you are thinking to make is a perfect fit for you. For example, if you are trying to make a place in an older league, you will have to make some serious efforts in order to determine whether the team suits your requirement.

More importantly, whatever the case is, it is always important to agree and honor the philosophies of your coach. Concisely, we can say that before you go ahead and tryout for the specific team, it is always prudent to get yourself tried out by the team.

Preparation For The Big Day

Once you decide which team best fits you and you get ready to play with them, for them, now the next task is to get preparation for the big day. As a player, you should always keep in mind that at the end of the day it is your performance based on which the coaches will take judgment about you.

No coach will look at your personality - all they will see is your performance and overall soccer skills, such as how fast and strong you are, how good you are at passing the ball, is there accuracy in your shooting of ball, are you a good offensive player or a better defensive player, and other things like that.

Thus, if you want to make a place in the team, you must be ready to deliver the performance and let them appreciate your soccer skills.

Working Out For Tryout

Now that you know it is the performance that counts in tryouts, you will have to work hard to be in top shape and to enhance your speed and endurance. You can start with practicing doing eight to ten hundred yard sprints in a row.

You should continue with the same at least four-times in a week - in the month preceding the big day. In order to ensure good endurance, you must be capable enough to run at least three miles in twenty-five minutes or much less.

Last, but not the least, it is very important for a player like you to have a positive attitude for the soccer tryout.

Fedor training with kickboxer Tyrone Spong (K-1) afore angry Cro Cop

-May 2008. Fedor finished his study as a student of chair of Physical Training at Belgorod State University. It's understandable that Fedor's schedule wouldn't let him graduate as quickly as other students normally do. The topic of his thesis was "Methodology of physical skills' development training for 13-15 year old Sambo practitioners". Fedor may get to use his education and experience at the still in construction Academy of Fedor Emelianenko in Belgorod to coach professional fighers. -Fedor was 12 when he started training grappling under Vladimir Voronov, who remains his trainer to this day. For 20 years Voronov has been as much a part of Fedor's life off the mat as on it. Fedor (teenager) aspired to join the Russian national team. He didn't partake in life's pleasures but instead spent all of his time studying and training. Two factors were constant in his life then: a lack of money and the presence of his family and team. Frequently there wasn't enough money for food. Fedor and his brother Aleksander were constantly growing and training, and their mouths were not the smallest to feed. The food Olga Emelianenko grew in her makeshift garden was often not enough, and come winter a garden was impossible. "My mother not only loves me as a son," Fedor has proudly said, "but respects me as a person." Voronov pitched in, dropping off bags of grain or potatoes. The harder life became, the closer Fedor and his family and his team grew. The more they depended on each other's ...

Success Lessons From The 2007 Rugby Union World Cup Part 10 - 'El Mago!'

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In the evening of Sunday, October 7th 2007, Scotland played Argentina in the Stade de France in Paris. It was the last game of the quarter finals. England and France had shown Scotland the way by ripping up the form book and defeating the favourites. Could Scotland do the same against Argentina -the team that had beaten France in the opening game of the world cup?

Argentina had won their group convincingly and had a super hero in El Mago - the magician - otherwise know as Juan Martin Hernandez. Scotland had Mr 100%, who never misses a kick, Mr Chris Paterson.

Martin Johnson commented that the Scots should not be content to just be in the quarter finals. They needed to find a way to win.

Argentina had defeated both France and Ireland in the group stage and were favourites at six to one on. Back in Argentina the authorities had changed the times of one of their most important soccer matches so that the nation could watch the rugby match against Scotland

An Argentinian commented: "We just dream that we can win the cup."

El Mago tried to kick a drop goal in his second kick of the match. Someone commented: "He thinks he can do anything these days." His kick was not far off. Successful people believe in themselves and are not afraid to take risks and try difficult things.

We all need to think of ourselves as El Mago - the Magician. As a boy, I performed magic tricks at my school. I was useless at it but even the thought of a possible 'miracle' drew an attentive and appreciative crowd!

We all need some magic in our lives. One way to get it is to work hard at our skills like El Mago.

Dan Parks kicked a long distance penalty to put Scotland in the lead. 0-3 As a boy in Sidney, Australia, he used two telegraph poles to practise his kicks with. Successful people accept the inconvenience, discomfort, and sheer boredom that regular, relentless practice can often involve.

Contepomi scored 3 points for Argentina and then another for a dubious penalty. 6-3 Argentina scored a try. 13-3 Paterson kicked a penalty. 13-6

At half time, only one converted try separated the teams. The Scots had made too many mistakes but they were still in with a chance of winning. Sean Fitzpatrick, the New Zealand legend who was subdued after his team's exit from the world cup, was not too depressed to give advice:

"The Scots need to start playing. They are kicking a lot of possession away. They need to take the Argentinians on."

Contepomi scored 3 points almost immediately. 16-6. Scott Hastings said: "The Scots need to be patient and things can happen." The successful realize they may need to wait some time before they see the results they want.

Scotland were ten points behind but, according to one commentator, should not panic and force things. I felt they did need to panic, get going fast and make things happen urgently or they would lose the game!

Juan Martin Hernandez, El Mago, scored a drop goal. 19-6 Someone said: "He is turning into the Maradona of this team."

Maradona, too, was a magician who could perform miracles. He famously brought the 'hand of God' into a soccer game against England when he hit the ball into the English net with his hand! The referee did not notice the 'hand of God' and Argentina went on to win the game.

Scotland needed to leave this game with no regrets and without thinking "What if?" They now scored a try. 19 -11 Paterson kicked and the ball went over off the post! 19-13 A game was now on!

The four Scottish subs that had come on ten minutes before had made a huge difference. Argentina were starting to make the mistakes that had been the preserve of Scotland until the latter part of this game.

In the end, Argentina won. They have an ambition that burns as brightly as any other team in this competition. They will play South Africa in the semi-finals.

Scotland were too cautious for too long. Successful people get going as early as possible. Geoff Thompson, one of the greatest and most thoughtful martial artists in the UK, gets up at 5.30 a.m. every day to get the day off to a good start.

He walks early and writes early and even arranges to meet people early so that he can sort out the serious from the timewasters! My granddad had a similar philosophy.

He would get up at 6 a.m. and clean all the shoes in the house. He would take his Lakeland terrier for a walk and catch rabbits or pick mushrooms for lunch and would then work hard in the garden. He always told me that "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

The Argentine Pumas were gracious in victory. Their captain, Agustin Pichot, said: "Scotland played with pride and passion. I have a lot of respect for them."

The Scots did not make excuses. Kenny Logan commented:

"We lost it. We made too many mistakes. We didn't start playing till the subs came on after about fifty minutes. When Scotland upped the pace they scored a try. We did not have this intensity in the first half."

Dan Parks said much the same thing: "We didn't start playing till too late. It's not to be. Pretty heart breaking to be honest but we move on."

The coach, Frank Hadden, agreed: "We didn't play well enough and it took us too long to get into the game."

What success lessons can we learn from this quarter final?

Dream big dreams like the Argentinians. Don't be content with just being present. Play to win!

Don't be afraid to become a magician. Work extra hard at whatever you do, start to believe that you can do anything and you, too, could become a worker of magic.

Do more than other people and you may well end up attracting an admiring crowd to watch or learn from you. They may even call you 'El Mago!'

Accept the discomfort, boredom and sheer inconvenience that regular, relentless practice can often involve.

Get going as early as possible. Up the pace and take urgent action before it is too late.

Don't finish the day thinking "What if I had really got going and done more?" End each day without regrets.

Accept your defeats like the Scots without making excuses.

Miracles do not always happen. Get over the heart break of your defeats as quickly as possible. Learn from them and then move on.

The Legendary World of Negro League MLB Memorabilia

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the most overlooked but highly priced MLB memorabilia are the legendary items of the old Negro league from 1920's onwards. Although it is quite difficult to get a real authenticated piece of Negro league Memorabilia but MLB fans have long admired and cherished such rare items.

In recent years, there have been many instances of highly priced auctions for these items. Just a few years earlier, the popular Negro League Baseball Museum in Kansas City bought a uniform belonging to Kansas City Monarch Infielder Newt Allen for over $20,000. On of the reasons that such uniforms attract high prices is their scarcity.

Such organizations as Leland and Hunt Auctions work with sports fans and interested parties to find and sell the major Negro league items. An authentic Negro league item will easily fetch a couple of hundred dollars from the major collectors of MLB memorabilia. Even a replica of such famed items is in high demand and is offered by companies such as Ebbetts Field Flannels and Negro League Stores. It is estimated that a vintage Negro league jersey will sell for more than a Grand.

Due to the restrictions imposed on Negro league and almost non existent publicity by press, the legend has grown significantly. According to the experts, the demand for Negro league memorabilia far exceeds any other MLB collectibles due to the difficulty of acquiring an authentic piece and the legends associated with each item. With only two dozen major Negro leaguers alive and an extinct history, it is impossible to distinguish reality from the fact. Whatever the case, an MLB collectible associated with the likes of Satchel Paige and Ted Radcliff is bound to attract MLB fans willing to share the stories of mythical proportions and superhuman feats.

How Small Teams Benefit From Team Building Activities

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Small teams can arguably benefit most from team activities when they are carried out properly and with clarity of purpose. Large teams have the problem of possibly becoming unwieldy with too many potential leaders, all vying for position.

Teamwork activities within a small team are easier to manage and assess. A group of four or five people can quickly find its feet, deciding on who does what without the confusion often found within large teams. This alone gives the them an advantage.

Team building activities for a small team work best if they are kept simple, straightforward and are not overly complex. They should not be generic in nature, but rather highly specific and completely relevant to the work place environment. There should be a clearly defined goal that all team members understand and are dedicated to working towards achieving.

These activities for small teams should always incorporate clearly defined roles and responsibilities for each team member. The team itself should decide democratically who does what, when, where and how. In this way team members can see where they fit in. They can then easily appreciate their individual contribution to the team's activities. Before engaging in any kind of group team work, members should be made aware of the essential difference between a group and a team. In this way they will know what they have to become in order to achieve their goals.

A group is merely several people who chooses to be together, while a team is a similar group, but one with clearly defined objectives and goals that each member is committed and dedicated to working towards. It is this commitment to a goal that every member shares that makes the essential difference between a group and a team.

The main reason for engaging employees in team building is to increase motivation and productivity in the work place. Small teams can benefit from such activities through becoming re-focused on their work goals. Working together as a team can break down distracting barriers between people.

Barriers may be political, racial or merely personal. Engaging in team activities can help enormously to create a closer bond between individuals that forces them to reassess their position within the team. When they have the chance to evaluate the overall picture properly, they can see more clearly where they fit in, thereby better appreciating their true worth and value, as well as that of others.

Many companies, corporations and organisations have found team building to be of immense importance and value. In many cases they have incorporated team based activities into their training programmes. It has been demonstrated that taking part in structured team activities has multiple benefits for small teams. These include a significant improvement in individual leadership skills, as well as a significant improvement in overall team morale.

Barriers that can be a block to creativity are broken down, and organisational productivity increases. Additionally, the strengths and weaknesses of the team are exposed, allowing them to focus on the areas they need to build up. Overall, there are many real benefits to be gained from ensuring small team's have access to team building activities.

Steroids and Major League Baseball

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The 2010 Hall of Fame voting is over and Andre Dawson was the only player that received enough votes to be elected to the Hall. This story is about who was not elected and what I feel is why. Mark McGwire only received 23% of the votes needed. Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds along a number of former players on the available list will be under the same cloud as to whether these players will be elected to the Hall of Fame.

So that is the question as to whether or not steroid use should impact a player's election to the Hall of Fame. Along that same thought line is an even greyer area. What about the records that were made for some of the players using steroids? Single season home run records and other records are an issue here and I am wondering what fans think. Steroids played a role in the player's performance. Whether they gained strength or aided the recovery or lessened the severity of injuries steroids enhanced performance.

Players now and in the future will be faced with reaching for records that may be out of reach. Records that were broken may not have been. The issue is not going away. Fans, players, writers and management all have an opinion. They all don't agree but at the same time all do. Steroids should never have happened and all agree that the steroid era has ended.

But what now? Will the league just let the dust settle and move on? Addressing the issue will have its consequences. The players and I am sure the union will have a problem if players in question are dealt with in a negative manner. Baseball was slow in addressing the problem and closing the barn door after the horse has left doesn't change what has happened. But at least steroid use is tested for and violations are severe. Ask Manny Ramirez.

There is debate if any of this really matters. I am sure there were reasons. The home run race between Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa was good for baseball. Fans loved it. Baseballs were flying out of stadiums through out the league. Attendance was the best in years. So what is best to do? Nothing?

There is an area that I think will show fallout. The baseball writers are showing that election to the Hall of Fame will reflect if a player used steroids. Time will tell as to how long this perception that the body voting on Hall of Fame candidates will hold their vote on these players. Will it make a difference if they come clean on using steroids? Or will time heal the wounds?

There is enough blame to go around on how steroids hurt the game. The players, the clubs and the commissioner's office all own a part of it. And you might even say the fans also. If enough outrage had been made would it have made a difference?

Major League Baseball's American League East (AL East)

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Divisional Makeup

The AL (American League) East has operated under the same configuration since the 1998 season. In that year the Detroit Tigers moved out of the division to allow the expansion Tampa Rays in. The division itself now consists of, in alphabetical order, the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Rays (formerly the Devil Rays) and the Toronto Blue Jays.

History

The East has been one of the most productive divisions in all of baseball, winning 5 World Series Championships over the past 11 seasons. It has also produced 7 of the 11 Wild Card playoff teams during this span. As for the inter-division results themselves, the New York Yankees have won the division 9 times (3 World Series), followed by the Boston Red Sox (2 World Series). The only other team to win the division during this span has been the Tampa Rays. The two other divisional teams, the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles have not won the division since the 1998 reconfiguration, although Baltimore did win the division in 1997.

Competition

This division is unique within the majors as two of the top payroll clubs, the Yankees and the Red Sox usually rule. With their deep pockets they are able to construct ball clubs that can compete each and every year. The other teams in the division don't have this luxury. For these remaining teams (Baltimore, Tampa, & Toronto) to compete they need to use a "restock" philosophy, which is essentially building teams for one or two year runs and then trading out the personnel when it becomes to costly to maintain.

In a nutshell this is the AL East. In 2008 the Tampa Rays were able to win the division with a young, low cost core. The Rays should be able to compete for at least two more seasons at a reasonable cost, turning the AL East into a three team powerhouse along with the free spending Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

The Biggest Sporting Event on the Planet - Betfair Betting to Get 20% Better Odds

Image : http://www.flickr.com

From heavy favorites Brazil, a five-time champion of the FIFA World Cup, to debutant nations Slovakia and Serbia, the 32 qualified finalists promise an exhilarating set of matches over about a month long period. For true enthusiasts of the game, interested in raising the stakes on their favorite team, there is a premier online betting venue available through Betfair, one of the world's leading gaming sites. Launched in 2000 by Andrew Black and Edward Wray, Betfair essentially allows you to place a bet on virtually any level you wish against another person. Betfair acts as an exchange for betting, holding the money in virtual limbo until the bet has been settled.

Betfair cuts traditional bookmakers out of the loop.

By being online, Betfair allows you more options, and a secure way to place bets and collect winnings. More specifically, Betfair allows gamblers to place bets against each other in Betfairs online forum. The odds are set by other punters rather than the traditional bookmaker. Once a member, you can place bets and set a Back bet (on a selection to win) or you could also place a Lay bet (against the selection to win, against the Back bet). This system allows Betfair to provide its customers with (on average) 20% better odds than a traditional bookmaker system, because punters set the odds, and, unlike bookmakers, do not build margins into their prices. A further advantage of an online betting forum on the scale of Betfair lies in the excitement of faster technology. While watching the World Cup from home, you can place a bet in-play, during a match, again using odds set by other punters.

While the odds may become more and more competitive as the match goes on, the bet in-play option allows the thrilling chance of taking a risk in real-time as the world's soccer finals unfold before your eyes. Betfair essentially has lifted gambling to a new, easier, more fun level. As one of the world's largest gambling operators, Betfair has over 100,000 customers online every month. These customers hail from every corner of the globe, and with representation like this available, you can be sure to always find a punter to place a bet with you online, no matter what the time or event.

The excitement of this years World Cup is already palpable. Aside from the heavy favorite Brazil, current champion Italy (four titles) will also be present, alongside Germany (three titles), Uruguay (two titles) and Argentina (two titles). South Africa, while never having won a title, is the first hosting nation since 1934 to compete in preliminary qualifying rounds. As a host nation, they are automatically granted a place at the World Cup. Other major competing nations include: France, the United Kingdom, United States, Greece, and Spain.

For fans seeking to a place on Betfair during the World Cup action in June, the first step is to set up an account. Only those betters with a registered account can utilize the online system. This account allows for better online consumer protection. Other safety benefits include setting a financial limit on the amount you feel safe betting, if you feel that is necessary. These measures, along with Betfair's Know Your Customer (KYC) policy, allows the company to know and protect its customers to the best of its ability. Once the World Cup finals begin, it will an exciting and exhilarating race to the final champion. As the world watches and cheers, teams from the America's, Europe, Asia and Oceania will proudly compete for team and country. A total of 32 teams, in ten different venues, playing all over South Africa for the span of a month, will create plenty of exhilaration and excellent odds for winnings.

Cape Town World Cup Transport - How to Get to the GreenPoint Stadium

Image : http://www.flickr.com

At last, official information is available on Shuttles, Park-and-Ride and Walkways to reach the Cape Town Stadium on match days - hot-off-the-press from a networking session with Cape Town City management!

In a nutshell:

If you are thinking of travelling in a private vehicle to the Stadium, there is no way this will be permitted. Furthermore, if you are thinking of using private tour operators, unless they have registered and gained accreditation with the appropriate FIFA organisers, the same restrictions to access apply.

So...Here are tips on how to get there... (worth mention is that most of the transport options are free with a soccer ticket).

Shuttles:

Stadium Shuttles operate between the main transport hub at the Cape Town Civic Centre and two loading points at the stadium. Shuttles will operate from 4 hours before an event until 4 hours after the time of the final whistle. Use of this shuttle is free with a match ticket.

Special Needs Shuttle: This shuttle will operate from the main Civic Centre transport hub directly into the stadium grounds, for the use of those with mobility impairments and accompanied by one carer only. Contact transport.info@capetown.gov.za to book a place on this shuttle.

Airport Shuttle: The Airport Shuttle will operate daily and take people to the main Civic Centre transport hub, from which they can take another shuttle to the stadium on match days, or link onto an Inner City Shuttle to get to various parts of the city. This airport shuttle costs R50 p.p. one way and is integrated with flight schedules to run every 6 to 30 minutes.

Inner City Shuttle: These operate on 4 circular routes around the inner city. The cost of this shuttle is R8 per trip or based on distance travelled. There are several shuttle pick-up points on the circular route so that visitors can get around the city. These route maps will be available on the Cape Town City website under 2010/ Getting around.

These routes include:

Civic Centre to Waterfront and Sea Point* along the Atlantic seaboard to Queens beach - cost based on distance travelled;Inner City Bowl area* - cost R8 per trip and scheduled every 10- 30 mins;UCT to the Civic centre (on match dates only) - Cost free of charge with match ticket;Atlantic seaboard service (on match dates only): Houtbay to Granger bay. This is a pay as you go service based on the distance travelled. Please note: this is good news for those travelling from Houtbay as this shuttle goes directly to the stadium - no need to go to the Civic Centre hub!!

* On non-match days and after the World Cup, the Inner City Shuttles will continue to operate as a Hop-On Hop-Off system to get around our beautiful city.

Park-And- Ride: Transport to the city includes 25 Metro Rail stations with Park-and-Ride facilities. 10 of these stations, specially identified as World Cup Park-and-Ride stations, will have additional parking facilities, event related activities, refreshments, lighting, toilet facilities and security until 12h30 or 01h00 on match days. All train tickets are free, on the date of your soccer ticket.

So the key is to find Cape Town holiday accommodation near these 10 stations: These Metro Rail stations are Fishhoek, Retreat, Ottery, Claremont, Goodwood, Century City, Brackenfell, Oostersee, Kuilsriver and Strand.

For additional information, contact the Call Centre: 0800 656463

Walk to the Stadium: The anticipated Fan Walkway from the Civic Centre is about 2.5km and is still under construction, but when completed will be a very attractive and safe route. With all things considered, this is possibly the best option to take as it avoids queues and waiting for the Civic Centre shuttle. Walking will take you less than 30 minutes.

Tour Operators will be able to find parking space at designated areas in the CBD near the main Civic Centre transport hub. Tour groups are encouraged to use the Hospitality or Match packages that will facilitate integration of transport on various accredited shuttles.

To Summarise

This will be a spectacular event with all the fanfare and razzmatazz of doing something new and exciting - not to speak of being LOUD.

Enjoy the ride.......... and plan ahead to make sure that you take jackets, raincoats and some of your own favourite refreshments to make the journey easier as there will be queues and delays. Remember that no refreshments will be permitted into the stadium, and rumour has it that you shouldn't carry a pointed umbrella as this may be classed as a weapon!!!

Watch this space for more information as the final touches are put together to make this World Cup a grand event. The structure of transport arrangements of the city are still in transition and will be evaluated at each of the remaining test events at the stadium.

Brian Wynn & the Millionaire League, fraud or ham?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Why do not, I assure you, Your Honor. I myself am a believer blind scam sites on the Internet, what I lost in three months to guess in a row on these things? $ 2,743.34 to be exact. This is a lot of money, not to win, but as a great loss, a fiasco of my financial dreams. So once again, I do not trust a certain place where they say you make $ 500 dollars in the first three hours, all lies.

But I will not go on this way to generalize and not jump to conclusions that theyare all fraud and waste. While there are some money-making courses in the Internet that are very suspicious at first sight, but fortunately or is loaded with a set of very informative content or a well-formatted, and constantly updated information. Anyway, I spent the last $ 50 Millionaire League by Brian Wynn that I thought would never be a quid off at all.

So yes, this is my start with the Millionaire League. Well, I wonder why Ispend the last $ 50 on things I knew I would lose. And guess what 'people, because I have confidence in me and the idea that I earn a bit of restraint' my student life in monthly expenses, and even if I do, I'm something to learn. I gathered all my guts and chunked in 50 box to activate my subscription.

It seems ... the same with most other sites if you search through simple and not get involved in detail. Actually there are a lot of inside information, I promise to be coveredI am the first (which gave me a list of endless, how can I be overwhelmed to make money online). Then I read and smiled: This guy seems to know what he does, and the side, at least, is very well designed and creates an atmosphere involved. But excuse me that I should stop right now and say it still does not have $ 500 with his tricks, but $ 90/day, a number of practical and realistic though. But I am happy because at least one real benefit that has not done much, but good enough. Iwas then addressed by his site to a more real thing: a forum for members of Facebook. I mean, if you want a site where you can ask questions and she answered, in fact, Facebook, trust me.

I think Brian Wynn was not a scam, after all, and if not to earn $ 500 a day, I'm happy to settle with $ 90 for two hours a week with little money to invest, and this is the average amount what we do every day only one of its methods (my first test was$ 1648.45 and came in two weeks after I League is the millionaire). It is probably not what people expected, but at least it gives you a realistic view of making money online, is everything, at least I benefited from my investment of time.

Group work - three blocks of effective teamwork

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Without doubt, teams working together can produce a better result than any one individual working in isolation. In many ways, anything of real significance can only be achieved through teams. While there may be someone who is attributed with a great breakthrough, the reality is that they generally have many teams of people who help them to achieve the great results.

So if teams are so vital to achieving great results, what are 3 common blocks that Stop-teams to work effectively?

Block 1: personal ego

We all want a more or less pay for what we do and achieve results that are recognized. The problem is that the ego personality becomes important as the results, people take decisions and actions that begin:

Are in their own interest
Protect your reputation or status
Could not in the best interest of the team, organization or results
If you want to increase orcreate effective teamwork, you must focus on results, not ego.

Block 2: Assumptions

One of the real advantages of teams is the diversity of views and experiences they bring themselves to specific challenges. The value of the services can be significantly reduced if individuals on the basis of other assumptions to begin making their professional discipline. For example, when people think of their marketing, perhaps their first assumption is that theyall creatives. In reality, a lot of people who work in marketing do things like research, which is very much analytical. Similarly, one might assume that accountants are only interested in money, when in truth most are really interested in business. After all, financial reports are merely a representation of what is, and what is not, happening in business in a common currency called money.

Block 3: Not creating underlying conditions

A house is built on strong foundations. A team is no different. If you don't create strong underlying conditions or foundations, a team will not create as good results. Think about it, teams need a clear purpose, roles need defining, trust needs to be built, views need to be expressed, to name just a few. If one or many of these underlying conditions is lacking, it is going to impact on results.

The Bottom Line

Teams don't deliver great results by chance. So what blocks do you need to start addressing to deliver great team results?

Group E Predictions for Germany 2006

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Italy is a team that regardless of winning the World Cup in 1934, 1938 and in 1982 has not performed up to the expectations in the past. If I was to sum up their show off in Japan Korea World Cup the word boring is the first that comes to my mind. The strategy was to get people to focus on how hard it is to face a host nation.

Marcelo Lippi is now Italy's new coach, and he has taken a hard-line approach with the players not paying any attention to the inflated egos of some of the Italian stars that he handles. In the seasons of 2004 and 2005, Lippi sought to refresh the team by bringing in nine stars to the team and they turned out to be just what Italy needed during the qualification campaign.Amongst Lippi's choices are 5 from Juventus, 5 players from AC Milan and 4 from Palermo.

Czech Republic confirmed their presence at the international scene at the 2004 European Championship. They made some of the best performances in terms of good football and during the tournament, and losing only in the final stage playing a great semi-final game against Greece.
Karel Bruckner is the coach and he secured a place for them in Germany 2006 World Cup with a team strong in the attack with a lot of style and with their heart Pavel Nedved.

They also have Petr Cech, who might be the Premiership's best goalkeeper. Tomas Rosicky domains the midfield and he is surely going to make an impact on this tournament and Milan Baros who seems to come back to live whenever he is playing for his country.

Some might think though that this group is a two team competition, however USA and Ghana are in all the way. It is hard to be fair when you see analize what Czech Republic and Italy can do, but the Americans can be dangerous to underestimate. The USA have some genuine top-class youngsters in their lineup and it really wouldn't be wise to overlook the USA, but at the same time, if the Czechs and Italy perform as we know they can, then they shouldn't fare better than third place in Group E.

Soccer Layouts - Playing Field Dimensions

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Basketball has its court and soccer has its own field. Every game has its own place where it is to be played. Depending on the setting, soccer layouts or playing field for that matter varies in sizes or dimensions.

Here a certain field types and its specifications will be talked about. Three of the most common field types will be tackled here one by one.

International Matches Field
Obviously, this kind of field is the widest. This is where international matches as the name suggests were being played. The size of this field may range from 110 to 120 yards in length and between 70 to 80 yards in width.

Standard Matches Field
There is no exact required field dimension here as long as it does not go below 100 to 130 yards in length and its width does not go below 50 to 100 yards.

AYSO or Beginner Field
This bracket consists of very young players. That is why this field type needs to be proportionately small also. There is no specific size for this field as long as it is proportioned the similar way.

All the field types consists of the very same thing namely, the touch lines which serves as the lengthwise boundary of the field, goal lines which were shorter and marks the field edges. After marking the exact center of the field, a 10 yard circle is made around it. Another line cutting the field that can be found 18 yards away from each goal post towards the center of the field as in the case of an international match field is called a penalty area. This can be readily identifiable because it forms a big rectangle on each side of the field. Another line cutting across the field center is called a halfway line. Each goal post must be painted white. The line that can be seen inside the penalty area and the goal post is called the goal box. The field is not complete without the flagpost on every corner of the field and a quarter-circle towards the field that is drawn 1 yard away from every flagpost.

Specifications for all the playing field types may vary but the field size don't really matter as long as it is complete with all its required soccer layouts.

Wellington Phoenix Gold Coast United V 25 - October - 2009

Wellington Phoenix Gold Coast / United 25 - October - 2009 www.a-league.com.au Phoenix blitz AVV The Wellington Phoenix broke its course is based so emphatic 6-0 by beating the Gold Coast United in their Hyundai A clash League-Westpac Stadium. After weeks of missed opportunities they deserve to break the record for the victory with six consecutive draws, the Phoenix finally found his goal scoring boots with Daniel grabs a shotgun and Tim Brown, Chris Greenacre, Paul Ifill and Troy Hearfieldalso on target. Ifill had a hand in three goals before rounding off an excellent performance with the fifth just before the hour mark. But in reality the home side could have had more with Ben Sigmund having a first-half effort come back of the crossbar and Ifill unlucky not to open the scoring inside the first two minutes. Instead after dominating the first half, it had to settle for a 1-0 half-time lead. But unlike in previous weeks when the Phoenix has failed to hold onto its advantage it put Gold Coast to the sword. Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert was understandably delighted at the turn around. "I'm chuffed. To me that's got to be one of the best performances in the A-League since it started against a team that have been very good this year," he said. "I was really please with just how clinical we were really. All round the pitch we were tight and tidy and we took the opportunities extremely well. People shifted the ball effectively and it was a real 90 minute performance." Both ...

Effective Team Building for Stronger Teams

TEAM LEADERS WORKSHOP

Alice asked Cheshire cat "which road should I take?" (Cheshire cat) "Where do you want to go?" (Alice) "I don't know"
(Cheshire cat) well it doesn't matter which road you take.

How do you tell a good leader? "By how many people will follow them into battle"

What is Coaching?

A discussion process between members of an organization aimed at exerting a positive influence in the motivation, performance and awareness of areas for improvement and development of another person to help them be as effective as possible

What is transformational Leaders!

A literature search of over 200 books and articles confirmed that successful organisations had more innovative and productive teams and team members who were more loyal and committed. They also had leaders who exhibited characteristics that "transformed a group of individual into a high performance team." Our first research question was: If successful organisations had more innovative and productive team members, and if loyal and committed team members were more productive and innovative....what role does transformational leadership play in creating and sustaining individual team members loyalty, innovation, commitment, and productivity?
Yet there existed no valid instrument for identifying those people who exhibited transformational leadership behaviours. We can identify transformational leaders by the way they exhibited these transformational characteristics;

1. Sharing the vision

2. Building a learning environment

3. Being a positive role model

4. Recognising individual abilities/values

5. Reinforcing self-confidence/independence

6. Supporting their team members

7. Driving out fear

8. Encouraging participation/self-expression

9. Fostering continuous improvement

10.Fostering initiative and responsibility

11.Encouraging persistence

12.Emphasising intrinsic outcomes

13.Advocating shared leadership

A great philosopher was once asked what his style or way of leadership was. He said, "There isn't one style or way of doing things. Success in leadership comes from taking a bit of all the things you have learned from every style and way you have learnt it, and then adapting it to what you need for the environment, time and person you are dealing with." In other words there is no one-way to do things.

I have chosen to take the good parts of many different leadership styles, and I have created my own blend of mix, so that I can implement what suits the occasion I am in, whenever and wherever it is needed.

The best way I have heard it stated was by John Maxwell when he said, "No matter how much you learn from the past, it will never tell you all you need to know for the present."

My Ice-burg Leadership Theory

Team - above the water, this is what everyone sees.

Leadership - keeping the team afloat

If what you see above the water is excellence, it's only due to the capacity of the teamwork and leadership below - this is what makes the team stable.

As we get stronger spiritually we add support, commitment, ownership, passion loyalty, and growth to our team. If you want to be served you need to serve. If you want to be a good leader you need to be the best servant of all. Emulate what you wish to see in others.

Value Verses Idea - What is the value of leadership?

Why are you in leadership?

Is it because the idea of becoming a leader sounds great? When times get tough an idea will not keep you going, if you value nothing your commitment will fluctuate.

What is the value of the things you do? We need to be Consistent. Ask yourself if you are the same at work as you are at home and whether you work because you enjoy it, or you work because you need to. If you work because you need to, you are working for an idea; this type of person will clock on and clock off at the minute.

Seven Leadership Mindsets;

1. Sow to grow not to survive - (don't just do what you have to, invest in development and growing yourself)

2. No glass ceilings - (seek to exceed, don't be the best - be better than the best)

3. Don't compromise - (do unto others as you would like done unto you)

4. Take responsibility for your actions and decisions - (Be they positive or negative, take responsibility face to face with your team)

5. Accept no surprises - (hear everything your team has to say, good and bad)

6. Don't accept that it "can't be done" - (can't, is an acceptable challenge) use cup eg;

7. Build your credibility before, you sell your credibility - (don't speak before you have achieved, hope is a confidence - but action is substance)
