Like basketball, soccer players that are on the game field have their own designated positions. In the game of soccer there are eleven designated soccer positions on each team in the playing field. A single soccer team on the playing field has one goalie or goalkeeper and ten outfielders to play a variety of defensive, attacking and midfield positions. Each of these soccer positions has their own role and area of operation and certain set of skills are required in each of these soccer positions.

Defensive Positions or Defenders

Defenders are the players that are behind the midfielders. The main responsibilities of players designated in these soccer positions are to provide defensive support to the goalie and prevent the opposing team from scoring. Defenders usually stay on their side of the field.

* Centerback - the centerbacks' main responsibility is to stop the opposing team from scoring or more particularly the strikers and to get the ball out of the penalty area as much as possible.

* Sweeper - sweepers are the adaptable type of centerbacks. They sweep the ball if the opponents manage to break through the defensive line. A sweeper must have excellent ball handling, ball control and ball passing abilities to counter any attacking moves that the opponent does.

* Fullback - fullbacks are the players that prevent the ball from crossing or cutting back into the penalty area.

Midfielders

Midfielders are positioned midway between the strikers and defenders. Their primary responsibilities are to make sure that they have possession of the ball, take the ball from the opposing team's defenders and pass it to the strikers. Being a midfielder is one of the most exhausting soccer positions because midfielders' duties are broad. They are either called back into defensive position or sometimes attack the opposing team along with the strikers.

* Defensive midfield - duties of players with these soccer positions is to take the ball away from the opposing team's attackers.

* Attacking midfield - players with in these positions are responsible for creating scoring opportunities.

Strikers or Forward or Attackers

Players with these soccer positions are the ones nearest to the opposing team's goal. Their main duty is to score goals. The other duty of players with these soccer positions is to set up goal for their team mates. Most well known soccer players are strikers because strikers tend to score more than any of their team mates.

Intermediate Passing and Shooting

In the evening of Sunday, October 7th 2007, Scotland played Argentina in the Stade de France in Paris. It was the last game of the quarter finals. England and France had shown Scotland the way by ripping up the form book and defeating the favourites. Could Scotland do the same against Argentina -the team that had beaten France in the opening game of the world cup?

Argentina had won their group convincingly and had a super hero in El Mago - the magician - otherwise know as Juan Martin Hernandez. Scotland had Mr 100%, who never misses a kick, Mr Chris Paterson.

Martin Johnson commented that the Scots should not be content to just be in the quarter finals. They needed to find a way to win.

Argentina had defeated both France and Ireland in the group stage and were favourites at six to one on. Back in Argentina the authorities had changed the times of one of their most important soccer matches so that the nation could watch the rugby match against Scotland

An Argentinian commented: "We just dream that we can win the cup."

El Mago tried to kick a drop goal in his second kick of the match. Someone commented: "He thinks he can do anything these days." His kick was not far off. Successful people believe in themselves and are not afraid to take risks and try difficult things.

We all need to think of ourselves as El Mago - the Magician. As a boy, I performed magic tricks at my school. I was useless at it but even the thought of a possible 'miracle' drew an attentive and appreciative crowd!

Scotland needed to leave this game with no regrets and without thinking "What if?" They now scored a try. 19 -11 Paterson kicked and the ball went over off the post! 19-13 A game was now on!

The four Scottish subs that had come on ten minutes before had made a huge difference. Argentina were starting to make the mistakes that had been the preserve of Scotland until the latter part of this game.

In the end, Argentina won. They have an ambition that burns as brightly as any other team in this competition. They will play South Africa in the semi-finals.

Scotland were too cautious for too long. Successful people get going as early as possible. Geoff Thompson, one of the greatest and most thoughtful martial artists in the UK, gets up at 5.30 a.m. every day to get the day off to a good start.

He walks early and writes early and even arranges to meet people early so that he can sort out the serious from the timewasters! My granddad had a similar philosophy.

He would get up at 6 a.m. and clean all the shoes in the house. He would take his Lakeland terrier for a walk and catch rabbits or pick mushrooms for lunch and would then work hard in the garden. He always told me that "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

The Argentine Pumas were gracious in victory. Their captain, Agustin Pichot, said: "Scotland played with pride and passion. I have a lot of respect for them."

The Scots did not make excuses. Kenny Logan commented:

"We lost it. We made too many mistakes. We didn't start playing till the subs came on after about fifty minutes. When Scotland upped the pace they scored a try. We did not have this intensity in the first half."

Dan Parks said much the same thing: "We didn't start playing till too late. It's not to be. Pretty heart breaking to be honest but we move on."

The coach, Frank Hadden, agreed: "We didn't play well enough and it took us too long to get into the game."

What success lessons can we learn from this quarter final?

Dream big dreams like the Argentinians. Don't be content with just being present. Play to win!

Don't be afraid to become a magician. Work extra hard at whatever you do, start to believe that you can do anything and you, too, could become a worker of magic.

Do more than other people and you may well end up attracting an admiring crowd to watch or learn from you. They may even call you 'El Mago!'

Accept the discomfort, boredom and sheer inconvenience that regular, relentless practice can often involve.

Get going as early as possible. Up the pace and take urgent action before it is too late.

Don't finish the day thinking "What if I had really got going and done more?" End each day without regrets.

Steroids and Major League Baseball

The 2010 Hall of Fame voting is over and Andre Dawson was the only player that received enough votes to be elected to the Hall. This story is about who was not elected and what I feel is why. Mark McGwire only received 23% of the votes needed. Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds along a number of former players on the available list will be under the same cloud as to whether these players will be elected to the Hall of Fame.

So that is the question as to whether or not steroid use should impact a player's election to the Hall of Fame. Along that same thought line is an even greyer area. What about the records that were made for some of the players using steroids? Single season home run records and other records are an issue here and I am wondering what fans think. Steroids played a role in the player's performance. Whether they gained strength or aided the recovery or lessened the severity of injuries steroids enhanced performance.

Players now and in the future will be faced with reaching for records that may be out of reach. Records that were broken may not have been. The issue is not going away. Fans, players, writers and management all have an opinion. They all don't agree but at the same time all do. Steroids should never have happened and all agree that the steroid era has ended.

But what now? Will the league just let the dust settle and move on? Addressing the issue will have its consequences. The players and I am sure the union will have a problem if players in question are dealt with in a negative manner. Baseball was slow in addressing the problem and closing the barn door after the horse has left doesn't change what has happened. But at least steroid use is tested for and violations are severe. Ask Manny Ramirez.

There is debate if any of this really matters. I am sure there were reasons. The home run race between Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa was good for baseball. Fans loved it. Baseballs were flying out of stadiums through out the league. Attendance was the best in years. So what is best to do? Nothing?

There is an area that I think will show fallout. The baseball writers are showing that election to the Hall of Fame will reflect if a player used steroids. Time will tell as to how long this perception that the body voting on Hall of Fame candidates will hold their vote on these players. Will it make a difference if they come clean on using steroids? Or will time heal the wounds?

There is enough blame to go around on how steroids hurt the game. The players, the clubs and the commissioner's office all own a part of it. And you might even say the fans also. If enough outrage had been made would it have made a difference?

Divisional Makeup

The AL (American League) East has operated under the same configuration since the 1998 season. In that year the Detroit Tigers moved out of the division to allow the expansion Tampa Rays in. The division itself now consists of, in alphabetical order, the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Rays (formerly the Devil Rays) and the Toronto Blue Jays.

History

The East has been one of the most productive divisions in all of baseball, winning 5 World Series Championships over the past 11 seasons. It has also produced 7 of the 11 Wild Card playoff teams during this span. As for the inter-division results themselves, the New York Yankees have won the division 9 times (3 World Series), followed by the Boston Red Sox (2 World Series). The only other team to win the division during this span has been the Tampa Rays. The two other divisional teams, the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles have not won the division since the 1998 reconfiguration, although Baltimore did win the division in 1997.

Competition

This division is unique within the majors as two of the top payroll clubs, the Yankees and the Red Sox usually rule. With their deep pockets they are able to construct ball clubs that can compete each and every year. The other teams in the division don't have this luxury. For these remaining teams (Baltimore, Tampa, & Toronto) to compete they need to use a "restock" philosophy, which is essentially building teams for one or two year runs and then trading out the personnel when it becomes to costly to maintain.

In a nutshell this is the AL East. In 2008 the Tampa Rays were able to win the division with a young, low cost core. The Rays should be able to compete for at least two more seasons at a reasonable cost, turning the AL East into a three team powerhouse along with the free spending Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

At last, official information is available on Shuttles, Park-and-Ride and Walkways to reach the Cape Town Stadium on match days - hot-off-the-press from a networking session with Cape Town City management!

In a nutshell:

If you are thinking of travelling in a private vehicle to the Stadium, there is no way this will be permitted. Furthermore, if you are thinking of using private tour operators, unless they have registered and gained accreditation with the appropriate FIFA organisers, the same restrictions to access apply.

So...Here are tips on how to get there... (worth mention is that most of the transport options are free with a soccer ticket).

Shuttles:

Stadium Shuttles operate between the main transport hub at the Cape Town Civic Centre and two loading points at the stadium. Shuttles will operate from 4 hours before an event until 4 hours after the time of the final whistle. Use of this shuttle is free with a match ticket.

Special Needs Shuttle: This shuttle will operate from the main Civic Centre transport hub directly into the stadium grounds, for the use of those with mobility impairments and accompanied by one carer only. Contact transport.info@capetown.gov.za to book a place on this shuttle.

Airport Shuttle: The Airport Shuttle will operate daily and take people to the main Civic Centre transport hub, from which they can take another shuttle to the stadium on match days, or link onto an Inner City Shuttle to get to various parts of the city. This airport shuttle costs R50 p.p. one way and is integrated with flight schedules to run every 6 to 30 minutes.

Inner City Shuttle: These operate on 4 circular routes around the inner city. The cost of this shuttle is R8 per trip or based on distance travelled. There are several shuttle pick-up points on the circular route so that visitors can get around the city. These route maps will be available on the Cape Town City website under 2010/ Getting around.

These routes include:

Civic Centre to Waterfront and Sea Point* along the Atlantic seaboard to Queens beach - cost based on distance travelled;Inner City Bowl area* - cost R8 per trip and scheduled every 10- 30 mins;UCT to the Civic centre (on match dates only) - Cost free of charge with match ticket;Atlantic seaboard service (on match dates only): Houtbay to Granger bay. This is a pay as you go service based on the distance travelled. Please note: this is good news for those travelling from Houtbay as this shuttle goes directly to the stadium - no need to go to the Civic Centre hub!!

* On non-match days and after the World Cup, the Inner City Shuttles will continue to operate as a Hop-On Hop-Off system to get around our beautiful city.

Park-And- Ride: Transport to the city includes 25 Metro Rail stations with Park-and-Ride facilities. 10 of these stations, specially identified as World Cup Park-and-Ride stations, will have additional parking facilities, event related activities, refreshments, lighting, toilet facilities and security until 12h30 or 01h00 on match days. All train tickets are free, on the date of your soccer ticket.

So the key is to find Cape Town holiday accommodation near these 10 stations: These Metro Rail stations are Fishhoek, Retreat, Ottery, Claremont, Goodwood, Century City, Brackenfell, Oostersee, Kuilsriver and Strand.

Walk to the Stadium: The anticipated Fan Walkway from the Civic Centre is about 2.5km and is still under construction, but when completed will be a very attractive and safe route. With all things considered, this is possibly the best option to take as it avoids queues and waiting for the Civic Centre shuttle. Walking will take you less than 30 minutes.

Tour Operators will be able to find parking space at designated areas in the CBD near the main Civic Centre transport hub. Tour groups are encouraged to use the Hospitality or Match packages that will facilitate integration of transport on various accredited shuttles.

To Summarise

This will be a spectacular event with all the fanfare and razzmatazz of doing something new and exciting - not to speak of being LOUD.

While there may be someone who is attributed with a great breakthrough, the reality is that they generally have many teams of people who help them to achieve the great results.

So if teams are so vital to achieving great results, what are 3 common blocks that Stop-teams to work effectively?

Block 1: personal ego

We all want a more or less pay for what we do and achieve results that are recognized. The problem is that the ego personality becomes important as the results, people take decisions and actions that begin:

Soccer Layouts - Playing Field Dimensions

Basketball has its court and soccer has its own field. Every game has its own place where it is to be played. Depending on the setting, soccer layouts or playing field for that matter varies in sizes or dimensions.

Here a certain field types and its specifications will be talked about. Three of the most common field types will be tackled here one by one.

International Matches Field
Obviously, this kind of field is the widest. This is where international matches as the name suggests were being played. The size of this field may range from 110 to 120 yards in length and between 70 to 80 yards in width.

Standard Matches Field
There is no exact required field dimension here as long as it does not go below 100 to 130 yards in length and its width does not go below 50 to 100 yards.

AYSO or Beginner Field
This bracket consists of very young players. That is why this field type needs to be proportionately small also. There is no specific size for this field as long as it is proportioned the similar way.

All the field types consists of the very same thing namely, the touch lines which serves as the lengthwise boundary of the field, goal lines which were shorter and marks the field edges. After marking the exact center of the field, a 10 yard circle is made around it. Another line cutting the field that can be found 18 yards away from each goal post towards the center of the field as in the case of an international match field is called a penalty area. This can be readily identifiable because it forms a big rectangle on each side of the field. Another line cutting across the field center is called a halfway line. Each goal post must be painted white. The line that can be seen inside the penalty area and the goal post is called the goal box. In today's media we are constantly being reminded of a health time bomb that is about to explode as children today are not active enough.

There are so many competing distractions for our children's attention, video games, endless channels to watch, these can all lead to sedentary lifestyle if they are not kept in check.

Soccer is the beautiful game, played by millions of young girls and boys (aged 6 to 18) across many continents, whether it's on the beaches of Rio, the back alleys of a major city nearby or the local park, you will find someone kicking a football around.

In today's society there has been a shift to more organised soccer practice for our youth players. Gone are the days of jumpers for goal posts, as streets are littered with cars and grass verges now have houses built on them.

Having a more structured approach is both a good and a bad thing; on one hand young players get structured development and education through willing volunteers who show them how everything from how to warm up correctly, develop their technical ability with the ball right through to skill development and organised small sided games to wrap everything up together to provide a total learning experience.

Today time is limited and therefore there may be only an hour or two devoted to structured soccer practice during the week, what happens when practice is over?

Getting your child to participate in an organised soccer school or club can bring tremendous benefits to you and your child.

Soccer can help increase your child's self esteem, which feeds their self talk which ultimately drives their performance. But soccer isn't the only winner, quite often it can be seen that academic performance can increases to!

Studies have shown that getting young children involved in soccer at an early stage promotes a real healthy attitude towards the game and this attitude continues with them into adult life.

The number one reason why children play soccer is to have fun; if soccer is fun and enjoyable then players will want to continue playing. This benefits their overall fitness and reduces their health risks considerably.

Soccer is made fun by coaches worldwide who willingly give up their time voluntarily to organise youth soccer practice and coach teams.

Gone are the days when soccer, for the really young players, was an 11 a side game with offside rules and no touches of the ball for massive periods of the game.

Youth soccer from the age of 6 to 11 is typically about having fun, playing small sided matches such as 4 v 4 with no goal keepers, promoting lots of touches of the ball and player interaction on the pitch.

Through playing soccer and encouraging children to take regular exercise many of the risk factors that are associated with heart disease such as obesity and diabetes can be reduced significantly. It is stated that childhood obesity has increased by more than 50% since 1976, which is a really scary fact.

Getting your child involved in soccer doesn't just improve their health. We've mentioned already the improvements at school.

Social benefits, such as mixing with others, having to work as a team, contributing through individual effort to a collective goal, experiencing the highs and lows, picking each other up, competition, striving to be the best, aiming to win and supporting and helping others are all by products of playing soccer.

Many of the life skills that the players learn through soccer are beneficial in later life, how to form and build relationships, developing a sense of co-operation, how to lead people, how to handle adversity, what commitment means and punctuality, are all key qualities that will benefit the players in adult life.

If your child is already playing soccer, great. But what can you do if you want to get your child involved in a local soccer team? Here are seven must ask questions that you and your child should consider when attempting to find a suitable club...

1) What level of commitment is required in terms of practice sessions and games at the weekend?

2) When are the training sessions? When are games played, what's the format and how much time will you need to devote?

3) How far are you willing to travel to training and to matches? Some clubs will operate travel teams where distances can be considerable, including overnight stops.

4) What are the costs involved? Some clubs adopt a pay when you play, others a more structured approach. The most expensive clubs are not always the best, ask yourself is what your paying in the equivalent to what your child is getting out?

5) What do you and your child want out of playing soccer? This needs to be aligned with the prospective clubs philosophy, is it about having fun or winning?

6) How best will your child learn, develop and stay interested? Are they happy just to be involved or would they thrive in a more competitive environment?

ii) Ask other parents/guardians about local junior and youth soccer teams. You'll be surprised at how many adults or their children are involved.

iii) Encourage you children to ask their school mates where they play their soccer. Knowing some of the team can be a real advantage as players integrate themselves into a team.

Bertha will be coming on August 1st. Aaron is the first of the Elite Four who uses bug types. His team has tons of 4X weaknesses so it is best you use them to your advantage. His team is the weakest but if you don't finish his pokemon off quickly, they can quickly become irritating particularly Yanmega and Vespiquen. As I say in the video, if you struggle with this battle, your in for a long road, I recommend you save before entering the Elite Four and then if you think it might be too much, just turn your game off and do some training (part 100). Fire, Flying, and Rock types all are very strong here and should be your primary types for attacking. Drapion is the oddball of his team as it is his strongest but his only non bug pokemon. Use Ground moves on it but watch out for Ice Fang should your pokemon be ground type or the even higher chance your carrying torterra which is 4x weak to Ice. They do this by listening to critiques of their own performance and acting on them, by not cutting off people who disagree with them, and by not puling rank when it's time to make a decision.

High performance leaders make sure that everyone on the team not only wants to contribute to the success of the organization but can contribute. Great team leaders have an action plan to close skill gaps through formal skill-development workshops; they are continuously searching for opportunities to apply the skills of each team member, and they offer individual coaching as needed.

One of the most important tasks of a team leader is to make sure that his or her team functions at a high level. It is up to him or her to see that the team always remains on track. "On track" means that everyone is clear about and committed to the business strategy and operational goals that flow from it; and that every team member understands his or her role and responsibilities; and most important the team leader must be able to make tough decisions.

Good team leaders are always asking important question, such as, "Are the members of my team playing for real, or are they just going through the motions?" "What's the best way for me to hold up a mirror to members of my team to accurately reflect their behavior?" "How do we change?"

One of the characteristic of all great business teams is that they continually raise the performance bar, but good team leaders know how to motivate by example rather than fear. They leverage power, not monopolize it to drive up their team's performance. To do this, team leaders put power and authority in the hands of the team to deliver maximum performance.

One of the hallmarks of great business teams is the willingness of team member to assume accountability for the success of their colleagues. This can take many forms, from tough questioning to providing resources to coaching.

While the team leader is ultimately responsible for making the call on the coachability of his or her players, every team member has an obligation to motivate him or herself by asking, "Am I up to the task of continually reinventing myself to meet ever-more demanding performance standards?'

Most people naturally resist change; therefore team members can be resistant for a number of reasons. Some will not see what's in for them; others will disagree on the need for change; still others will be distrustful and suspect a hidden agenda.

The challenge is to part the curtain to see what is behind the resistance to change. Intention is critical here. Is a team member's intention to change stronger than the lure of remaining comfortable with past ways of operating? If a team member is unwilling to change, there is often little that can be done, other than the parting of ways

When a team is clearly committed to a common direction, when it focuses on the vision of the organization, when it is clear about its roles and responsibilities, when the relationships between team members are open, then it is making the organization great.

The Best Play In Youth Football

The answer may surprise you. Many youth football teams attempt to emulate what the coach has seen on TV the past week or what the head coach ran as a high school player 20 years ago. Unfortunately what works at the College or Pro level on TV often doesn't work very well at the youth level. The coach's high school system may have worked well for his team 20-30 years ago with 6 days a week practices and fleet running backs, but fails miserably at the youth level.

At the youth level our job as coaches is to teach the kids how to block and tackle safely and effectively. We teach them how to get into good athletic stances as well as the base rules and strategies. Our most important job should be to make football fun for the player and coach our teams up to their full potential.

However, you can have fun and win at the same time. In fact most players that play on perennial losing teams lose their love of the game and quit. That is one reason I developed these coaching materials for my own 400 kid organization, so that our coaches would be competent enough to coach the kids to their God given potential. To allow our teams to play competitively so the kids would stay engaged in our program. In fact my materials are filled with how to make practices both well organized and fun.

Most of the plays or schemes the typical youth coach has in his playbook are not designed to the talent level of most youth teams. I see teams with no speed often trying to run sweeps, I see teams with kids that can't throw or catch throwing (trying to throw) 20 yard passes. I see teams running bootlegs with very slow quarterbacks. I see teams running a dive play with no lead blocker into the heart of youth defenses. I see teams trying reverses against well disciplined teams for huge losses. I see pass patterns with 3-4 and even 5 receivers. I see teams trying to get a 9 year old to read two different defenders on option plays etc etc etc.

I rarely see: good lead off-tackle plays, one or two receiver pass patterns, optional run and pass plays, trap plays, pulling, double teams, wedge blocking, designed plays to draw the defense off-sides, unbalanced formations, motion, and great sportsmanship.
In youth football each year is different; you will not always have a big team or have a very fast "feature back" that can outrun everyone on a sweep play. Unlike the colleges or pros, you don't have 100s of kids from all across the country to choose from or 20-40 hours a week practice time. In my mind the team that wins because they just happen to have the fastest kid in the league and he outruns everyone on sweeps and kick returns is a joke, a luck of the draw thing. Football is a team game and a well coached team won't give up sweeps for touchdowns or ever kick deep ti that speedster. My first team defense has not given up a sweep for a score in over 5 years.

I've coached youth football for about 15 years and one play that we have always been able to run effectively regardless of the size or talent of the team I've had is the lead
off-tackle power. It can be run by out of nearly any formation, I love it out of the Single Wing with 4 lead blockers and a double team block at the point of attack. While it isn't a terribly sexy play, it gets you 4-5 yards every down in most cases and sets up "home run" complementary plays like the trap, play action pass or wing reverse. Most youth teams are set up to stop the sweep, the "holy grail" play for most youth teams. Other defenses try to shut down the "dive" in the gaps next to the center. Very few youth football defenses are set up to stop even an average off-tackle play.

If the other team gives you the off-tackle, take it until they over-commit, then run the home run play. In our Championship game in 2003 the other team was so concerned about taking away our inside "wedge" play, they left open the off-tackle. We started the game with 7 straight tailback off-tackle plays to our strong side and scored. The very next series they moved out to our off-tackle hole and we ran wedge for a 65 yard score on first down. Then they tried to stop the wedge play and moved everyone up and we ran the wedge play action pass for a 60 yard score. We were up 46-0 in the third quarter when they finally just gave up and tried to run the clock. Both the wedge and off tackle plays can be run well by very average skilled kids.

In another game the defensive team was set up to stop the sweep and wedge plays but again were giving us the off-tackle play. We run no-huddle so we get many more snaps in than most youth teams. In that game we had 71 snaps, of which 51 were off-tackle strong plays. We were getting our 4-5 yards every time, nothing real big, but we did get some very big gains and touchdowns from blocking back traps, wing reverses (2 TDs) and TB run pass option (pass for TD). So we scored 5 touchdowns and out of the 5 TD's, 4 were in excess of 20 yards. We were only stopped on downs once and we fumbled once too. We were 2-2 passing for 56 yards and a TD. Now how much fun was that for our 3 tailbacks that shared duty at the tailback position that day and for our pulling guards? They all had a blast, so did our place kickers, and the 4 other kids that had TDs playing non-tailback positions. Oh yeah, our defense had fun too, they could play with abandon since we were moving the ball at will on offense.

The net is, the off-tackle play at the youth level is the hardest play to stop, yet few teams try and perfect it. It takes little talent to run the play, no studs required. In my Single Wing Offense, we practice that play more than any other. We block it a variety of ways so we know it will work and we will run it, regardless of what kind of defense we face. Our kids can run the off-tackle in their sleep, we often start our practices with the "Power Hour" as Steve Calande calls it. We run our off-tackle strong power for 30-40 minutes on air, fit and freeze and then with players holding hand shields going 100%. Ye,s just one play often makes up half of our offensive practice time.

If your team is doing poorly, you don't need a trick play or new offense (what most coaches panic and do) you need to get perfect at running the off-tackle lead power play.
We know we are playing a good team when they come out and try and establish the
off-tackle play. Of all the videos I've seen from youth teams from all over the country, regardless of the offensive set or personnel, the best teams always have a good off-tackle play. It isn't sexy but it does the trick and it sets up everything else in your offense.

Don't worry about putting in a bunch of fancy "trick" plays before you get your off-tackle play down perfectly.

Soccer Training Drills, The Key is in Touches Per Session

Soccer training drills are the single most important part of improving your teams ability. To be more specific repetition contained in the drills carried out in a specific session help player overall confidence on the ball.

Although fairly common sense not all soccer coaches get the message. Take, for instance, a child's development in any area. How do they improve any aspect of their motor skills?

The answer is simply by continually repeating the process of a certain movement over a period of time. Learning to play soccer is no different. Young players learn and develop their skills by repeatedly carrying out specific drills that enforce the learning of that skill. Only by doing this will a coach see an improvement in his players.

So how do we accelerate the learning process and allow player to develop their soccer skills at an earlier age?

The secret to this is to accelerate the training sessions by including soccer practice drills that involve more kicks per drill. Ok so more touches on the ball per drill = more touches on the ball per session which in turn means accelerated training sessions

To ensure that your players can accelerate their development there are five steps that you can take to help young players on their way.

1. Carry out Warm Up Drills using the ball at all times. This will introduce the ball early into sessions and allow players to get a feel for the ball going into the main session.

2. Be Prepared. - The preparation of a training session can make or break the whole soccer practice. Get the training ground early and set up for your drills before the player arrive. This reduces wasted time and allows more time for on the ball training.

3. Choose Drills Carefully - Accentuate the Skill Factor. Choose drills that concentrate on individual skills. Make sure there is a ball for each player concentrating on the skills you want them to practice and repeat, repeat and repeat again.

4. Play In the Box - Use tighter areas for drill which encourage closer control. By keeping the box smaller this is proven to increase the number of touches on the ball and develop speed of touch.

5. Keep it Short - Reduce the number of players per drill to max 1 v 1 for starters. As confidence and ability improves you can add more players but keeping it to minimum ensures that everyone is involved and again there are more touches on the ball.

So there we have five easy steps to improve your player skill and accelerate their soccer development. More touches per session have been proven to dramatically increase a players' ability. Some well prepared coaches have experienced 5 times more touches per player per session compared with traditional training methods.

What will the status of the winners be when they emerge victorious from the tournament this month? It might sound an odd question, but think about how absurd it would be in any other sport. Imagine that six months after the FIFA World Cup, another tournament, also called the World Cup, was played with pretty much the same teams fielding pretty much the same players in a pretty similar tournament format with pretty similar viewing figures (both at the grounds and on the telly), but with 45-minute matches rather than the full 90.

I'm not questioning the existence of T20, because I love cricket, and I understand that this ultra-intense, short format of the game means people can watch a whole game in an evening after work; it gives the game more appeal, more coverage, more peak-time advertising opportunity and hence, more money. It's also a great spectacle.

I just think its going to be weird when there are two world champions of cricket.

Test cricket is, of course, an altogether different kettle of fish; tactics and gameplay are wholly different from the one day game. The length of time matches take, and the massive possibility of draws, means that a ranking system is the only way to produce a 'world number one team', whereas 50 overs-a-side lends itself to definite results in the finite time of a tournament. 20-20 is very much like 50-50 in its style and ethos: score as many runs as you can as quickly as you can; restrict as many runs as stingily as you can. It, too, can be played in a tournament, which is why we have this second 'World Cup'.

The winners will, therefore, claim to be world champions of cricket, and the best in the shortened version of the game. But the Australia team that lifted the World Cup in the West Indies a few months ago already claim that title. And 'Twenty20 world champions' doesn't really mean anything, at least yet: so few T20s are played internationally (England have played the most in history with a grand total of 6; India have played just 2) that no-one will really care. Also, the games are so short that a second-rate international team could conceivably lift the trophy. The flaws in a Zimbabwe side could perhaps be papered over for three hours at a time that would undoubtedly cause a collapse over a whole day or more. What if a 'minnow' wins the whole thing? They are played so infrequently by the test-playing nations that the 'world champion' label will be redundant until they play the tournament again.

One solution would be to have an annual or biennial T20 tournament, outside of which international T20 is not played. Then it would be clear that T20, while popular and important, is not of the same caliber and class as the official cricket world cup, in the same way that the Six Nations is keenly contested every year, but with the winning side not making any pretensions to overall global superiority. Maybe the difficulties will disappear as T20 establishes its niche. But the simplest solution this time round, to avoid any argument or confusion, would be if Australia won the danged thing. Doubtless they will oblige.

Bunt Young, Bunt often in Little League

Bunting is a very big part of baseball. And when a bunt down the right path is, it is very difficult to defend. Bunting have always been great and I feel that at a young age can be taught. There are basically two types of color: the square bunt and the pivot bunt. My preference is the pivot bunt, because the players simply do not have to pivot on their feet and raise it up. Once in a playoff game I had a player to wear a colored square, and placed a perfect bunt, and Beat Itout ... We all thought. World Cup Unforgettables - India v Australia 1992

The world cup of 1992 was one of the most memorable ever. It was the first world cup to be played under artificial lights, colored clothing and the white ball. However this was also a world cup marred by a stupid rain rule. In an effort to make the calculation of the target simpler, in case of the match being shortened due to rain interruptions, the organizers really botched it up with the most ridiculous rule ever. The absurdity of this rule was not realized until after the matches began and the rules actually implemented. We are featuring one such match now. It was also the first and only World Cup where the teams were not split into group and hence was conducted in a round robin fashion.

India came into the world cup on the back of an abysmal tour of Australia. They had lost the test series 4-0 and were comprehensively beaten in the final of a triangular tournament by the host, with West Indies being the other team. The world cup was being conducted at the fag end of that tour and the Indian team seemed to be devoid of motivation. Before meeting the Australians, India had already lost to England and their match against Sri Lanka was rained out.

Australia on the other hand came into the world cup as the firm favorites to lift the tournament in their own backyard. However they started poorly and came into the match against India having lost both their opening matches to New Zealand and South Africa.

Allan Border won the toss and elected to bat. They started really badly. They were at 2 for 38 at one stage when Dean Jones joined David Boon and began the recovery. The two took the score to 102 with some breath taking running between the wickets. After Boon fell for 43, Jones continued to take the Australian cause forward with partnerships first with Steve Waugh and then with Tom Moody. However the Australian innings fell apart after the dismissal of Jones, setting India a target of 238 runs.

To say that the Indian chase started off disastrously would be an understatement. Srikkanth got out for a duck when the team total was only six. The way Ravi Shastri batted then defied logic. When he got out he had taken up 75 balls for his 25 runs and the Indian total at that time was a paltry 58 with almost half the overs already gone. Tendulkar came next and was dismissed for 11 trying to up the tempo. Kapil Dev came in next and scored a rapid fire 21 off 26 balls thereby providing some much needed impetus to the innings. When he left India still was in a precarious position of 4 for128.

Then came the superb partnership between Azharuddin and Sanjay Manjrekar. The two took the score to 194 before Azharuddin departed for a well made 93. The partnership was broken in the only way it seemed possible, through a run out. Then the rain started playing its part in the match. 3 overs were reduced from the Indian innings while only 2 runs were reduced from the target. After the rain interval India kept losing wickets while inching towards the target.

Off the last ball India needed 4 runs to win with 1 wicket in hand. Javagal Srinath was facing the bowler with Venkatapathy Raju at the other end. To this day I remember vividly the commentary of that last ball by Bill Lawry while watching it on TV. Tom Moody bowls the last delivery. Srinath takes an almighty swing at the ball and hits it high towards long on. Bill Lawry screams "It"s a SIX!!!". I start jumping up and down like crazy (I was 14 at the time). But I froze suddenly as both myself and Lawry realize that it"s not going for six but infact going into the hands of Steve Waugh. Incredibly Waugh drops the catch. Elation again!!! Waugh recovers quickly and throws the ball to the wicket keeper"s end. Raju sets off for the 3rd run which would make the match a tie. Lawry momentarily forgets that he is an Australian and yells "RUN!!! RUN!!! RUN!!!" The throw is wide and everyone including myself is praying that Raju does a superman. But the keeper recovers quickly enough to run him out and I was left with the biggest heartbreak of my life. That was the first and only time I had tears in my eyes after watching a cricket match. Just couldn"t believe what I had just witnessed!!!

What is the Arizona Fall League

Often discussed on various call-in shows, newspapers and now blogs, the Arizona Fall League (AFL for short) is a league for most of baseball's top prospects. The season begins in October and usually lasts a little over a month. However, this month is considered one of the most important times of a players season.

If a player had a good season but a bad AFL year than he will end up having a so-so year in scouts and managements eyes. Conversely the league can also serve as retribution for a poor regular season.

While the league is open to any signed professional baseball player, rosters are usually stocked with players from the lower levels of the minor league baseball system.

Minor League baseball is divided into the following levels, with each being of greater importance. Some players may begin in instructional league. The next level is rookie league. If a player advances past that then the next step is two A levels, one low A and the other high A. After that we have AA and then AAA before a player can reach the majors. The Arizona Fall League consists of players mostly from the high A and AA level. Additional players will come from AAA and a select few from the low A level.

With that said, why do many baseball fans look forward to a bunch of minor league players getting together to play in Arizona every October? The AFL is seen as a testing ground, as only the best of the best are invited. Some of the past alumni certainly confirm this view. Four time MVP Albert Pujols, one time MVP Justin Morneau and other superstars such as Jacoby Ellsbury, Ryan Braun and Ryan Howard are just a few high level players to have gone through an AFL season.

Could the 2008 seasons group of AFL players could be one of the strongest yet? How many all-stars and future MVP candidates will emerge? Only time will tell that tale. All a fan can do now is sit back and keep an eye on the individual players results from the 2008 Arizona Fall League.

Spring Training occurs annually through February and March. It is a series of exhibition games and practices which occur before the beginning of the Major League Baseball regular season. This annual tradition allows for your and new players to compete for position and roster spots for Major League Baseball teams. It also allows for veterans and returning players to practice and get into shape before the start of the season. Spring training creates a spectacle annually. It attracts many fans, and draws big crowds who enjoy travelling to the warmer climates to watch and enjoy the activities that are all associated with Spring Training and the Cactus League. Spring training also usually occurs at the same time as college spring break, so that results in large groups of students travelling to Phoenix to watch the practice sessions and the exhibition games.

Spring training usually spans two months. It starts in mid February and continues up until opening day of the season, which is usually the 1st week of April. Traditionally pitchers and catchers appear for spring training first, arriving a week or two earlier then the position players. This is pitchers benefit more from a longer training camp. The longer training camp allows pitchers to become more accustom to the strain and stress that is required from playing their position.

Phoenix annually plays hosts to 9 Major League teams during spring training. Along with Arizona, Florida also is used as a training location as well. Watching Major League teams practice and Cactus League exhibition games is a fun way to spend an afternoon on a beautiful Phoenix Arizona spring day.

The World Cup 2010 South Africa Predictions

The World Cup 2010 is some time off yet, the qualifying campaigns have not started, but is now as good a time as any to get the ball rolling and start predicting the eventual winner in South Africa?

For the first time ever, the worlds premier sporting event will be hosted on the African continent. This will bring a different culture to the forefront of everyone's consciousness even though the tournament itself will take place in Africa's richest economy.

Is there a home advantage? Does this mean that the emerging African nations will fair better than in recent World Cups having been tipped for greatness but always seeming to fall short? Or will it be one from the usual gang of five nations that lifts the Trophy again? Amongst the usual suspects, it will be no surprise to see Brazil or Argentina - the giants of South American football.

From Europe we need look no further than the current champions Italy, the perennial tournament experts Germany, and the flair of France. Or do we? Will England eventually break free from it's overly haranguing press? And, under the stewardship of Italian Fabio Capello, will they finally achieve their country's dreams, after 44 years, of it's one and only World Cup success? Can fellow underachiever Spain put together a concerted run and for once fulfill the talent they generally bring to any world cup?

Following on from these teams, there are also a number of possible winners. If given a run of luck, which any country will need during the tournament, dark horses Croatia are always technically gifted. Sweden, Norway and Russia are solid. Holland will be full of talent. Greece and Turkey have also come a long way, respectively. In truth it is difficult to assess the outcome but my head still tells me it will be one from the usual five. My heart on the other hand hopes it will be England.

Zone Blocking For Youth Football Teams

There are many differences between youth football players and College, Pro and High School players. To say the difference is night and day would not do justice to how different they are. It would be like the differences in the beauty of Miss America and the 1,000 pound bearded lady at the State Fair.

College, Pro and even High School players practice 6 days a week and play their games on a 7th day. Most of these guys practice 20-30 hours each week, youth football teams practice from 4-8 hours every week. Pro, College and High School players have played the game for 7-25 years, they have the basics down, they know the game. Youth football players have 1-2 years of experience and many youth teams are made up of a majority of kids that have never played before. Most youth football players don't know the difference between a 3 technique and a footstool. Pro, College and High School kids are 16-35 years old, they can move faster, control their bodies better and retain and process much more information than youth football players. Pro, College and High School teams cut weak players, they are the best of the best. The pros and college teams cut kids every day that were the best players in their respective youth and High School teams. Even the High Schools cut weaker players, they also send weaker kids to JV or Reserve teams.

Pro, College and even some High School players are being taught by coaches that coach for a living. Most devote 50-70 hour weeks to learning their craft and most have 10-15 years of experience playing the game. This compares to the amount of experience and time a youth coach can spend on developing himself as a coach, which for most doesn't even allow for the time to go to a single weekend coaches clinic or the purchase of a single Coaching Book or DVD. The difference in the levels of coaching expertise is just huge, yet a youth coach with no experience with complex zone blocking is going to teach it to others?

In a nutshell Pro, College and even most High School teams are made up of great players athletically compared to the typical youth football player that will never play High School football let alone even sniff at College or Pro Football. Youth teams are made up of a very limited amount of players, you cant send the kids down to JV, Reserve or Frosh teams, and you can't cut them. In fact you are going to play them, some probably will even start on your offensive line. While I have been blessed with talent on some of my teams, others had offensive lines that looked like the characters from the "Land of Misfit Toys."

By the time the youth kids get to High School, most of the real weak players have already quit playing, realizing football is just not their game. But today on your youth football team, these kids are still playing, still trying to figure out how to play and if this is their game. At the youth level in most leagues, everyone has to play some and most often you are going to have some unathletic players playing offensive line. Thast playing, not being cut or sent down to another team.

Pro, College and High School teams are not required to play all their kids, most youth teams do require you play everyone at least for a handful of plays. These less athletic kids are then playing a postion that greatly impacts every single play (offensive line) and they are going to zone block? Okay, that's great if I'm the defensive coordinator of the other team, but terrible if I'm the running back or the dad of the poor running back on the zone blocking team.

This is how perfectly good youth football players get soured on the game and quit and become part of the 70% of youth players that never play a down of High School football. It's a real shame and is the main reason I wrote the book, do all the clinics and developed the DVDs. Too many good kids get run off of playing football by poor coaches and terrible schemes, no wonder so many High School and Youth Football programs have love/hate relationships.

On the technical side, the zone schemes cornerstone is the "combo" block, where the offensive linemen gets an initial push on a defensive linemen, then comes off the block once good movement has been made, to then block a linebacker. This block mind you is blocked based on the type of defensive front the offensive linemen sees and can recognize, often involving line calls. This would be quite a lot to ask from a 9 year old youth player maybe playing his first game. Most kids that age are still struggling to figure out how to make a sound drive block on a player within 1 foot of them and making sure they remember to block on offense and tackle on defense.

Most High School teams can't even zone block well with Spring Football, year round football workouts, excellent offensive line coaches and 6 days a week practice. And you are going to do it successfully with youth players? With team sizes of 24-25 for many teams, your worst athletes are playing offensive line. So you are going to ask this weaker player to recognize the front correctly, make the right line call, make an effective double team block, get movement on a double team block, spy the linebacker at the same time, then know when to peel off at the exact right time and block the speedy and strong linebacker "in space" on the run on the same play?

So one of your least athletic kids is going to spy and track down and block in open space the other teams fastest and most athletic player (linebacker) after engaging another linemen? Wow that will be quite an accomplishment akin to building an atomic bomb out of a few leftover juice cans and some old mothballs, good luck pulling that all off. If you can teach that at the youth level, you have a Select Football team, should be playing in the National Championship game and as a coach should be coaching O-Line in the NFL. Zone blocking takes GREAT coaching, lots of time, excellent athletic linemen and savy smart experienced football players that can recognize fronts and have impeccable timing, none of which is in abundance at the youth football level.

Simple rule blocking using angles and overwhelming numbers in limited space is what works within the constraints of youth football and is what we teach in the book and DVDs. Zone blocking will fail and frustrate the kids and coaches. It did not surprise me that this zone blocking suggestion came from one of those one-dimensional fails-every-time youth coaches that uses such failed and useless tactics like "attack the center". Probably uses the famous "Hit Somebody" phrase and runs kids to death in football practice, then wonders why his teams can't win any games.

No doubt when this guys team loses, he's the one that blames it all on a lack of talent (every year) or "the kids just didn't want it bad enough". Geez I tire of these kind of guys, they ruin so many kids and teams. Unfortunately we see too many coaches like that in our game and is one of the main reasons over 70% of youth football players never go on to play High School football, it's a shame to see.

When coaching youth football, it's your job to pick out a scheme that will work with the talent levels, athleticism, maturity, practice time and coaching ability you have available. Playing a youth football team trying to zone block would be like shooting fish in a barrel, the poor running backs, the horror, the horror.

The Little League Team Parents Meeting: A Must for The Youth Baseball Coach

Each year I organize a parents meeting approximately two to four weeks before the start of the season. I prepare a handout of approximately three or four pages. Included is a list of the team with phone numbers and certain philosophies and organizational items.

People might say, "Well this is only youth baseball, it's not high school." This is true, but I have learned over the years that a parents meeting will make for a better run season for the kids, the parents and the coach. The meeting should not go more than ten or fifteen minutes. I leave a fair amount of time for a question and answer period.

I make this meeting a requirement for all parents. I try to lay out my goals and express to the parents about how I run my practices. Also, I tell them that players have to arrive at games 30 minutes before they start and if they cannot make a game, they must call me. It is very important that I let the parents understand I know their busy schedules and that as a coach you go through the same thing with ballet, karate, soccer, car pools, school work, etc.

Probably the most important point I go over is that because of my own busy schedule, I cannot run a taxi service for any players. Parents must be at practice five minutes before it ends. When I first began to coach, I never addressed this and after each practice I had a car full of players to drop off. As coaches, this cannot be part of our jobs for more reasons than one.

I also address any complaints parents may have during the season. I developed a standard policy of not taking any complaints for at least five games. This cuts down on a lot of phone calls and most of the times a complaint by a parent about playing time is taken care of by the sixth game.

Since I began doing this, I have had only a handful of complaints for a whole season in about the last eight years. When I first started coaching, I would go home after the game and there would be two or three messages on my answering machine.

As a coach, there are a lot of responsibilities and I try to cut down on the phone calls as much as possible. One system a lot of people use is the phone chain. This is effective only some of the time. Another system I use which is similar is the buddy system.

At the beginning of each year I ask for a couple of parent volunteers to help with the phone calls. Then I assign each player a buddy. So if there are twelve kids on the team, there are six pairs of buddies. The first thing I tell them is that if there is any question on practice time or location, call their buddy before they call me. And if their buddy isn't home, call someone else on the team list.

If it is raining, I call my two phone volunteers and divide the calls in half. Remember, each player has a buddy so they should never make more than three calls and maybe a call back to me. Any system you try isn't full proof and during the course of the season you can expect your share of calls.

There can be a whole lot of things to address at this meeting. Each coach might have their own pet peeve to discuss. The most important thing is to make sure you have each of the points you want to bring up in writing. This way, you are sure to touch on the points most important to you.

Remember, you are volunteering your time and you have a right to make the season run as smooth as possible for yourself, and that's the way you want it to be for your team as well.

Roberto Abbondanzieri, 33 years old, succeeded Pablo Cavallero as Argentina's number one after being given a chance by coach Jose Pekerman and has thrived in the spotlight since. Popularly known as El Pato or "The Duck", Abbondanzieri's professional debut took off in 1994 with Rosario Central, with whom he played until 1997. He then moved to Boca Juniors as their reserve goalkeeper. He trained in the shadow of Oscar Cordoba until February 2002 when Cordoba moved to Italian Perugia.

Abbondanzieri won the World Club Cup with Boca Juniors in 2000 and 2003. Since then, Abbondanzieri has become a permanent feature in Boca's goal and in June 2004, he became the goalkeeper for the Argentine team at the age of 31, which is quite unusual. As they say, it is better late than never.
On May 6, 2006, he was named as a definite squad member for the 2006 World Cup by Pekerman. Having represented the country on 19 occasions, Abbondanzieri has been a regular for Argentina over two years and was named the South American Goalkeeper of the Year in 2003.

Abbondanzieri has however, been hit earlier this year with a poor run and is hoping to put it behind him when he lines up for Argentina in the World Cup finals. At one point, the goalkeeping position of the Argentina squad had come to be viewed as the weak link in a side brimming with talented outfield players. Abbondanzieri said he has been in the national team for more than two years and never understood why the fans always went for the goalkeeper when there were other players and areas to analyze. This was made worse by the fact that he let in 6 goals in 2 warm-up matches against England and Croatia.

With such a negative perception, the pressure on Abbondanzieri must have been great. In such a situation, mental training is a must. For without such training, the confidence of anyone under such stress would surely be affected.

However, coach Pekerman has been reported saying that this was no longer the case and that Argentina would be going into the World Cup with a well-rounded team, capable of rising to the occasion. Abbondanzieri helped Boca Juniors win the Argentine Championship for the second year running in May this year.

Season 2007-2008 saw three of the four semi finalists of the Champions League come from the English Premier League. The other team that was represented from the Premier League was knocked out at the quarter final stage but only by Liverpool, a team from the Premier League! This surely is the proof that the Premier League is without doubt the best league in Europe.

In England people are even stating that as many as six teams from its Premier League should be able to enter into the Champions League as they believe that the majority of the top teams from the rest of Europe would struggle to compete in the Premier League. Where would teams such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Porto finish in the Premier League if they were to be admitted next season? I would predict that at least one of them would be relegated.

It is not all rosy in the world of English football. The national side has failed to qualify for the upcoming European Football Championship which is a great shame. In a strange way it could actually turn into an advantage as it will give the team longer to prepare for the more important World Cup of 2010. I personally would prefer to be able to watch England this summer as I am confident that the team would be one of the favourites to win the tournament. Poor management from the previous coach Steve McLaren and his backroom staff certainly cost us dear.

The Premier League is likely to only become stronger in the future however managers of the likes of Jose Mourinho (Inter Milan) are sure to want to make an impact.

Teams such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, Tottenham, Manchester City, Newcastle and Aston Villa would prove too strong for many of the major teams from other European countries.

The FIFA World Cup is very important in the world of international football, also known as soccer. The World Cup is contested by the men's national football teams of FIFA member nations and is awarded every 4 years. There have been 17 tournaments held to date, but only 7 nations have won the World Cup Finals. The nation of Brazil holds the cup currently and have won the cup a total of 5 times making them the leading team. The next World Cup Finals will be held in Germany where Germany holds 3 titles.

In 1872 the first international football match was played between England and Scotland. In the beginning of the sport there were never medals awarded. It was called a demonstration sport and was played at the Olympics.

In 1909 the game was finally played for a trophy and was organized by Sir Thomas Lipton. That game is often referred to a the first World Cup. The title was won by West Auckland. They won again in 1911.

In 1914 FIFA recognized the tournament as "world football for amateurs". This how things led to the first intercontinental football competition in 1924 at the summer Olympics. Uruguay won the tournament. In 1928 FIFA came up with their own international tournament.

Because football was not very popular in the united states it was not part of the program for the 1932 Olympics held in Los Angeles.

Cultural boundaries today have been minimised to a great degree as we notice the different global faces around us in our work environment. Diversity is of great interest to organisations today and for many organisations today cultural diversity quotas are set to raise a company's image and value.

To many individuals cultural diversity could slow down a progress of any team. However, it is an individual's attitude towards his/her responsibilities, their maturity and motivation that forms a strong team. In addition, it is important to share the same goals which are challenging, yet realistic and achievable. Teams with diverse backgrounds form their foundations through comfort at the initial stages. It is in periods of high stress situations that a teams personalities start to evolve. Dominant, active and stubborn personalities start leading the groups and weaker members withdraw themselves from core responsibilities.

Many teams are able to work in perfect harmony; however, these working conditions are always short lived until the more aggressive members self-appoint themselves as leaders in the playing field. In many cases, there is more than one aggressive member on a team which leads to conflicts when each holds its ground. It is important though to maintain stability within a team and keep the working climate pleasant in order to achieve team goals, which is where a mediator's effectiveness is important in order for teams to be constructively assertive and work collaboratively.

In addition, to aggressive, dominant members it is also common to find regular slackers in a team who tend to withdraw themselves from the team and their responsibilities. These types of members only become apparent once internal deadlines are not met within a team. It highly recommended addressing the issue earlier on rather than later when solutions are not so evident and motivation levels are difficult to rise. Furthermore, many teams also form sub groups, which are mostly emotional support groups and weaker members are never included or invited to be a part of. Hence, emotional damage is often a reaction to a withdrawing team member and a team must in accordance to avoid such situations from arising.

Behaviour is a function of individuals and situations, therefore, for any group to function effectively and efficiently, it needs to have its members proceed through the following stages of: initiation, seeking and offering information, clarifying objectives, conclusion and group consensus.

In conclusion, as much as it is an experience worthwhile to be part of an effective team it is more exciting building and strengthening one. It is through this experience we learn the numerous issues that may arise related to group processes namely, decision-making. However, research through observations has found that the differences in personalities and goals are the root cause of the development of conflict in any group at any given stage. It is also unlikely for extremely independent and stubborn personalities to co-exist without any conflict. Nonetheless, communication is vital in improving the functioning of a team. In addition, clear team goals need to be defined and agreed upon and most importantly, every member needs to feel as if they are an integral part of the team.

The Portuguese soccer national team (FPF), the Selecção (selection), is one of the strongest national teams in European football. Unfortunately, neither the Portuguese Soccer national team or any of the club teams have so far managed a Euro or World Cup win, even with their line-up of world quality players such as Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha also known as Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo. Maybe this will change in Euro 2008.

The home games of the Selecção are mainly played in the following stadiums: FC Porto play in theEstádio do Dragão, Lisbon performs in the Estádio da Luz Benfica and Sporting Lisbon have Estádio José Alvalade. The Portuguese Football Federation or the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol (FPF) was founded nearly one hundred years ago in 1914. A few years later in1923 Portugal joined the joined the FPF the World Federation, and then in1954 they became part of FIFA and UEFA.

The biggest success that the Portuguese soccer A-team has ever accomplished was when they celebrated at the World Cup in 1966 in England, who won the title that year. Portugal managed respectable third position, sixties soccer star Eusébio scoring a massive nine goals in the championship.

The European Championship 2004 was a great success for Portugal. They also performed well at the European Football Championship in the summer of 1984, in France and at the European Football Championship during 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands. At the World Cup 2006, the team included Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha, Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo, but unfortunately they still could not make the magic happen and Portugal again managed a respectable placing, finishing in fourth position.

In the quarter-finals of the World Cup 2006 played in Germany, goalkeeper Ricardo performed magnificently in the penalty shootout against England. He now holds a Portuguese soccer record as the first goalkeeper ever to wear the jersey of the Portuguese soccer national team three times in the World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the Portuguese soccer star who plays for British club Manchester United, he holds the strange distinction that he was signed in secret by the club and the media were only alerted when the stock market became aware of the signing as part of their share dealings.

In the last twelve months, Nani joined his very good friend Ronaldo at Manchester United. The young player signed for a reported fee of £14.5 million from Sporting Lisbon in June 2007. He plays as a winger and has already featured for Manchester United a number of times this season, scoring the winning goal against Spurs. Nani is well known for celebrating a goal with his highly acrobatic somersaults worthy of an Olympic gymnast.

1. Ensure a clear understanding of team member roles and responsibilities

As a virtual team, the need to clearly define roles and responsibilities becomes even more paramount than in face to face team environments. As a manager, or even team member, it is critical that team members (and managers) fully understand their roles and responsibilities, reporting relationships, as well as where roles and responsibilities overlap. If you are part of a virtual team, are you clear on this?

2. Negotiate matrix management relationships

A matrix management structure exists when a professional may be managed by two different managers, delineated often by projects they are involved with. Given the nature of virtual teams, individual members may often be part of a matrix management reporting process. As the days go by everything revolves with it. Many improvements come up in every aspect and soccer game is not exempted from it. One of the apparent improvements in soccer is the formation of its variety, indoor soccer, in which comes a new set of soccer rules.

These rules may differ in every prevailing soccer body but there are certain regulations that serve as a universal basis for the game that include:

Field shape, Size and Overall Arena Specifications
Indoor soccer arena may be basically oblong or rectangular in shape with artificial grass floors. In instances that it is being played in basketball courts, the floors of which were obviously a hardwood. Indoor soccer arena requires at least 6 feet tall walls that will cordon the ball when it comes out of bounds. Ceiling heights may vary. The field is basically 200 feet by 85 feet in size.

Goals
The goals were to be necessarily pressed on the wall to avoid budging when hit by the ball or any player who comes in contact with it. It also made smaller to contemplate with the size of the playing arena, same is true also with the penalty area.

Duration of the Game
Time is shortened in indoor soccer. Playing time in indoor soccer is played by quarters in which each quarter lasts for 15 minutes with a 3 minute interval between 1st and 2nd quarter, then another 3 minute interval between the 3rd and 4th quarter. Half-time is being marked by a 15 minute interval between the 2nd and 3rd quarter. If a tie happens after the 60 minute playing time is over, a 15 minute overtime extension is allowed until one of the team scores a goal.

Team Composition
Up to 6 players are allowed for each team including the goalie. Substitution is also allowed while the game is on provided the player to be substitutes must step out of the field first before the substitute comes in. Using of slide tackle is generally not permitted here.

These are only general rules regarding indoor soccer game. Other remaining rules may vary as what has been said earlier depending on the ruling body.
